US Grade 10 - 12
Intermediate Level
Prerequisite: Students MUST complete Algebra I, Algebra II and Geometry before attempting to complete this course to prepare for the ACT. [Student/parent MUST BE ABLE TO PRINT ACT PRACTICE TEST PAGES.] This class will focus on all four content areas tested by ACT - English, Math, Reading, and Science. Each session will present actual ACT questions or problems that are from previous ACT tests. It is important that students become familiar with the types of questions that ACT consistently includes on the official ACT tests. The more the student is exposed to actual ACT questions, the more they will become comfortable with the format which will lessen their stress during the "real ACT". The material covered during each session will be determined by the individual student's needs. This means that some students may require more in depth content explanations before moving forward and other students may move more quickly through the materials. Homework to be completed between sessions is REQUIRED and contributes to the ultimate success of the student. Math Strategy #1 "Work it out" Math Strategy #2 "Use the answers to eliminate incorrect answers and help you find the right answer" We will cover formulas that MUST be memorized. We will cover how to use the graphing calculator (TI-84 Plus). The Mathematics test measures knowledge of high school mathematics including pre-algebra, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, statistics, and pre-calculus. Science Strategy #1 "Look for key words" Science Strategy #2 "Go to the Charts and Graphs first" We will cover strategies for evaluating the information given to arrive at an answer. The ACT Science test measures knowledge of high school science topics via charts, graphs and comparing competing hypotheses. The ACT English test measures knowledge of standard written English related to usage, mechanics and rhetorical skills. The ACT Reading test measures reading comprehension related to central themes, interpretation of facts or details, drawing conclusions, word meanings, point of view and other text based thinking skills.
