Homework
4+ hours per week. Homework quantity will vary depending on how much we have to accomplish and in how short of a timeframe we have. Typically I prefer to assign 1-2 hours per week, which will usually consist of full ACT tests, individual sections, or supplemental material on weak areas within those sections. I always like to tell my students that standardized test prep is 5% tutoring, 95% independent, so the better prepared you are coming in to our sessions the more progress we'll be able to make.

Class Experience

US Grade 9 - 12
Beginner - Advanced Level
This is a one-hour open ended tutoring session for any and all areas of the ACT test. Whether you've taken the test several times before or your first time is coming up soon, we'll create a plan based upon your goals and your deadline to maximize your improvement. We can work on strategies and skills in all areas, or if you just have a few weak areas and you'd like to focus on just those that's absolutely an option as well. This is not a "one size fits all" class - I'll base my feedback, examples, practice, and advice specifically to what you're having difficulties with.

Though I will cater our topics and discussion to your particular areas of need, topics in each section may include:
English: Subject verb agreement, punctuation rules, avoiding redundancy and misplaced modifiers, and common tricks of the test writers
Math: percentages, ratios, arithmetic, order of operations, slope, linear equations, solving systems, exponents, parabolas, factoring, quadratics, inequalities, radicals, function operations, graphing strategies, geometric relationships for segments, angles, areas, and volumes, and trigonometry
Reading: comprehension strategies, ways to stop "second guessing" yourself, time saving strategies, and essential pacing techniques
Science: speed graph analysis, trend extrapolation and prediction, reading for critical info, and "matching your own answer" strategies.

I emphasize frequent examples and regular feedback during my sessions - I firmly believe that an hour of lecture is not a good way to maximize learning. I'll generally try to answer any questions my students have coming in, teach any new topics that may be requested, and then focus on providing and guiding students through as many examples as needed while emphasizing good note taking strategies and offering feedback.

Students should come prepared with a way to take notes (paper and pencil is preferred) as well as any quizzes, tests, homework sets, or study guides that they may want to work through. They should also bring an appropriate calculator, if relevant. Students are also encouraged to independently review and study their materials before we meet; we can make a lot more progress if they have already narrowed down some specific questions or topics that they would like to discuss.

At the conclusion of the session I will typically recommend and assign extra practice to supplement our discussion which should be completed before our next meeting. Answer keys for individual review will usually be provided, as I believe immediate feedback is essential.
