Homework
2-4 hours per week. Students will be assigned to read 40-50 pages of the novel we are studying each week and then answer some questions in Google Forms. At the end of each novel they will complete a project.
Assessment
Assessment will be done informally. The Google Forms assignment's primary purpose is to let me know if the students are doing and understanding the reading and if they have understood what we learned in class. I will provide each student with feedback on every assignment. A formal grade can be provided upon request. Requests for formal grades must be made at the beginning of the semester.

Class Experience

US Grade 5 - 6
Does your learner love reading? Or do you wish they loved reading a little more? Either way, this class is for you! Reading is my passion and I love sharing my passion with amazing kids. We will read some of my favorite books and build their literacy skills together! Students will engage in daily discussion, personal reading, and project-based learning.

We will meet two days each week for half an hour. During the first meeting, we will discuss the novel we are reading and introduce the literacy skill for the week. During the semester we will read two incredible books from very different genres, 'The Wonderful Wizard of Oz' by L. Frank Baum and 'Bud, Not Buddy' by Christopher Paul Curtis. During the second meeting of the week, we will continue to explore that week's literary skill using informational texts and poetry.

We will practice and learn using a wide variety of activities! We will utilize direct instruction, games, writing, and a lot of discussion! All kids learn best in different ways and I do my best to provide good learning experiences for all students in the class.

Students will be assigned to read some chapters (around 40-50 pages) of the novels we are studying each week outside of class. We will not be reading large portions of the novels in class. They will also be assigned to complete a Google Form with a few questions. At the end of each novel, students will complete a final writing project. This will give them a chance to show what they have learned and to focus more on their writing skills!

Other Details

Parental Guidance
We will be using Google Forms for homework. Students do not need a Google account to fill out the form. If this is a problem, please let me know and I will provide an alternate assignment. We will use Kahoot for review games at the end of each section. Bud, Not Buddy is about a young, orphaned black boy during the Great Depression. It does tell of trials and struggles that may be upsetting for some readers to learn about.
Supply List
Learners will need copies of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum and Bud, Not Buddy by Christopher Paul Curtis. I will post a few things to print in the classroom throughout the course of the class. It will be one or two pages and will not be every week. Students will sometimes need paper and pencil with them in class. Any supplies needed will be posted in the classroom at the beginning of each week.

Hello! My name is Mrs. Clarissa. I am a mom of 5, a bookworm, and a certified, experienced in-person and online teacher. I believe in learning through fun and play! I love seeing my students learn and grow as they discover new things on their own. I believe that the most important part of school is learning how to learn and learning to love learning! Once those two goals are met, students can learn anything they want.

I have taught online classes for 6 years and have learned how to engage students virtually. It has been a wonderful experience and I love the opportunity to reach out to kids from all over the world and learn from each other!

I earned a degree in elementary education from Brigham Young University in 2009. My life has been dedicated to helping kids learn and grow.

I also LOVE books! There are bookcases in every room of my house and I wish I had more. I enjoy reading fantasy books and discussing them with my kids and my husband. We all especially love Harry Potter and Percy Jackson. I also enjoy reading with my littles. Our favorites are Elephant and Piggie and Mother Bruce.
