US Grade 1 - 3
Beginner Level
This class will be conducted in a positive and supportive environment where students will be engaged in fun discussion and activities on screen, on whiteboards, and on worksheets. I will share my screen with students to guide them through discussions and writing activities. Students will be encouraged to share their ideas and work with the class as we go. Students may be asked to share their completed worksheets with the teacher after the class to better help me assess their needs. In this one time meeting, students will have the opportunity to meet me, introduce themselves, and discuss their current comfort level with various writing activities. We will begin with light discussion of interests. Together, we will work through various, no pressure writing tasks to allow learners to demonstrate their understanding and mastery of different types of writing skills. These fun activities will give me a better idea of learner strengths, as well as areas for growth and support in general elementary level writing skills. This also allows learners to develop a comfort level and rapport with me before jumping into an ongoing group. After assessing the student, I will be able to help guide them to one of my small writing groups that best suits their growth and comfort needs. The goal is to assess where students are at in their writing journeys, and identify how I can best meet their needs. ** I am looking at sentence formation, mechanics such as punctuation and capital letter usage, letter and word spacing, spelling, complete sentences, fluency, expression of ideas, and writing fluency. Examples of Writing Skills Activities Used in This One Time Meeting: - Completing sentence stems about a picture - Writing complete, original sentences about a picture - Drawing a guided picture and writing a sentence or two about it - Drawing and writing a sentence or two about a favorite animal - Labeling pictures - Making lists - Written expression of original ideas
