Each month is a new unit of study and monthly theme in writing: Getting Ready for Second Grade Writing- Mechanics of Writing, Narrative Writing, Fictional Writing, Informational Writing, How to Writing, Opinion Writing I, Comic Strip Writing, Writing Fairy Tales, Poetry Writing, Daily Writing Skills, Writing Prompts, and a second unit of study on Opinion Writing II.

The students will be introduced to the lesson through group writing using a class writing example. Each individual class will help the students gain structure in their daily writing skills, help students develop writing strategies, and skills in developing strong writing skills. Students learn to generate ideas for writing and make a plan to carry out a specific writing task. As an elementary classroom/ special education teacher, teaching the writing is a good way to launch the new year. The students are able to tell stories about themselves and share what is important to them. This builds a sense of community in the classroom. This writing class helps the young writers develop their writing skills and confidence in writing. I have seen students achieve success and growth with learning new craft moves and learning new strategies in writing.
