1-2 hours per week. Students will have a weekly writing task to complete as homework. The writing task will be to finish what we began to write in class. The parameters will be custom to each learner based on what they’ve written in class that week. This means, every learner's writing task will look a little bit different. This allows me to address specific issues with each learners' writing.Assessment
Learners can submit their completed work to me, and I will provide detailed feedback. I will given written feedback on every assignment students turn in. Students should submit their writing to me in messages. I do not offer grades at this time.Class Experience
US Grade 5 - 8
Do you have a reluctant writer? Does your learner struggle to put words on the page? This class aims to take the stress out of writing. Each and every week, students will spend 20-30 minutes of class writing with the teacher, receiving guidance and direction along the way. The hope is to take the stress off of parents when it comes to getting their kids to write. Students will write with the teacher in class, and they will be supported as they gain the confidence to write on their own. This class will give learners the tools they need to write independently, without an adult needing to watch over them. The structure of this class will be the same each week. With the first 10-15 minutes of class, we will receive our topic and brainstorm. Then, we will spend 20-30 minutes writing together in class. Learners will write independently, with teacher support through the whole process. We will also complete guided writing activities. With the last 5-10 minutes of class, we will revise and reflect on what we’ve written for the day. During the writing portion of class, students will write independently, with the teacher checking in every few minutes. There will also be times when we write together as a class. If students are stuck while they write, they can ALWAYS raise their hand and I will be there to support them. Additionally, learners will have the opportunity to help each other. Students will also have a weekly writing task to complete as homework. The writing task will be to finish what we began to write in class. The parameters will be custom to each learner based on what they’ve written in class that week. Learners can submit their completed work to me for detailed feedback and advice on next steps. The goal is to engage students in topics they’re interested in, and use that to motivate them to write. ❗️ We do NOT focus on any one form of writing, such as essays, fiction, or reports. Instead, we receive a new topic each week, and focus on getting our ideas on the page clearly, writing in complete sentences, and building strong paragraphs. We focus on the craft of writing itself, rather than one specific form. If you have any questions about the content level, please don’t hesitate to reach out. ✏️ What are our writing topics? ✏️ Week beginning 3/2/25: "Let's create a folktale" - Write creatively Week beginning 10/2/25: "What is your happiest memory?" - Write and reflect Week beginning 17/2/25: "Fly or turn invisible?" - Write about our preferences Week beginning 24/2/25: "All about our solar system" - Write about science Week beginning 3/3/25: "Review your favorite T.V. show" - Write about our opinions Week beginning 10/3/25: "Visit a national park" - Write about nature Week beginning 17/3/25: "What is the dust bowl?" - Write about history Week beginning 24/3/25: "What is your dream birthday?" - Write about ourselves Week beginning 31/3/25: "Tell a story" - Write creatively Week beginning 7/4/25: "The city or country" - Write about our preferences Week beginning 14/4/25: "Why we should get a pet" - Write persuasively Week beginning 21/4/25: "Write about a famous person" - Write a biography Week beginning 28/4/25: "What is a cell?" - Write about science Week beginning 5/5/25: "What is the silk road?" - Write about history Week beginning 12/5/25: “All About Me!” - Write about ourselves Week beginning 19/5/25: “Favorite Animals” - Write about our favorite animals Week beginning 26/5/25: “Are Aliens Real?” - Write about our opinions Week beginning 2/6/25: “Favorite Season” - Write about our favorite season Week beginning 9/6/25: “All About My Family” - Write about our families Week beginning 16/6/25: “Tundras and Deserts” - Write about the environment Week beginning 23/6/25: “Favorite holiday” - Write about our favorite holidays Week beginning 30/6/25: “Should kids make friends online?” - Write about our opinions Week beginning 7/7/25: "Favorite hobbies" - Write a how-to Week beginning 14/7/25:"Describe a mythical creature" - Write creatively Week beginning 21/7/25: "Different types of forests" - Write about the environment Week beginning 28/7/25: "Where should we go on vacation?" - Write about our opinions Week beginning 4/8/25: "What was it like in the 1920s?" - Write about history Further topics to be added. ✏️ About my Qualifications ✏️ I have been an English teacher and tutor for more than 7 years. Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! My name is Kristin, and I absolutely love teaching on Outschool. My goal is to build engaging classes centered around my two passions: writing and science.
Although writing and science seem like two completely different topics, they can be taught simultaneously to build a deeper understanding of both subjects. For example, I offer an ‘Essay Writing Through Scientific Exploration’ course, in which students study fascinating science concepts, and then write structured essays about their findings. Whether your learner is a scientist or a writer, they will learn new skills while deepening others.
I have been an English teacher and tutor for more than 7 years, and I have two university degrees in English and writing. This experience allows me to offer a variety of entirely writing-focused courses as well. I offer both ongoing classes and semester-long, full curriculum courses in writing and English language arts.
I have to admit, some of my favorite classes are creative writing classes. I've been writing creatively since elementary school, and I think telling stories is so much fun! I’m a published author, and I love sharing my passion with learners.
In terms of science, I have been a STEM teacher for more than 3 years. I trained at the NASA Glenn Research center, where real engineers taught me the best principles for teaching STEM to young students. While working for my local library, I hosted a STEM summer-day camp, ran a weekly science club, taught students how to use 3D printers, and coached a LEGO League.
My journey as an online teacher began as an ESL teacher with VIPKid and Magic Ears. This gave me essential skills to make virtual learning impactful. Ultimately, my varied experience allows me to make classes that are specific and unique, while simultaneously engaging and fun. There is a lot to cover, but my hope is to offer a curriculum that no other teacher has before.
When I'm not teaching, you can find me writing, reading, playing video games or baking. (Especially bread.) My favorite thing to do is hike with my best friend. (Who happens to be a 60-pound puppy named Gus.)
