This is one of my most popular classes and it's back! I've divided it into Levels A and B. Click here for the middle school level. https://outschool.com/classes/writing-about-animals-H3F9pXpk?usid=xPqAuK2O&signup=true&utm_campaign=share_activity_link If you are familiar with IEW, you know that Units 1 and 2 are the foundation of the whole program and must be learned first. Students must understand how to take effective notes, and how to write from their notes, not just to be successful with IEW, but to be successful with all writing. This class is a beginner class (Level A, 8- 11 year olds). Some learners need more practice than others with these foundational units. A third grader will need to practice this new skill many, many times. A sixth grader may need several practice sessions, and an 8th grader might only need a few. In this ongoing class, students will learn how to create a Key Word Outline from a short paragraph about animals, and how to rewrite it. Students are welcome to take this class as many times as they would like. If you are thinking of choosing another IEW class with me, this is a great place to start to see if we are a good fit. After a few weeks, older elementary students can consider this class... https://outschool.com/classes/writing-narratives-unit-3-of-iew-ir1B0dji?refuid=xPqAuK2O My classes are fairly structured with a lot of student input. My goal is to help them create their own notes that make sense to them. This is an essential skill that can be carried into every other area of education. The faster and more accurate they take notes, the more they will retain and understand. Students do not need any prior knowledge to take this class, but they should be able to read at least at a second grade level. The source paragraphs given in class should be easy for them to read. The more times they practice this outline, the more proficient they will become. Each class will feature one animal and one grammar concept. The animals change depending on student suggestions!
Learning Goals
Students will learn to identify key concepts and words in each sentence, how to take accurate notes, and how to speak and write from these notes.

Supply List
Shortly before class (usually the day before), I post a pdf page with a short paragraph about an animal. It's best to print this out for class.

UPDATE FOR SUMMER and FALL 2024: My video refers to the 2022-23 school year, but I'm still here! I am super happy to be starting my last year of law school. I will take the bar exam in July 2025.
FIX IT Grammar: In Fall 2024, I will teach all of Book 2 and 3, and the first half of 4 and 5. In spring 2025, I will teach the second half of 4 and 5.
WRITING: For fall 2024, my semester-long classes will use the Modern World History-Based Writing Lessons book from IEW. https://iew.com/modern-world-history-based-writing-lessons-student-book-only
If you want to see if we are a good fit before committing to a long class, drop in on one of my ongoing Friday classes!
I help children overcome their fear of failure, and I coach strong writers to continued excellence. Once children grasp specific writing concepts, they can apply their skills to all content areas. Mostly, I use the writing methods taught by the Institute for Excellence in Writing.
My youngest daughter is dyslexic and in my search to help her organize and communicate her thoughts, I discovered the writing methods of IEW. Over the last 17 years, I have studied and taught these writing methods at my kitchen table, in homeschool co-ops, and in private tutoring. Most recently, I taught IEW for seven years to middle schoolers at a public charter school in Southern California. I am currently a Registered Instructor with IEW.
I graduated from the University of Maryland with an Elementary Education degree, but I've learned way more from my own kids and hundreds of others than I ever learned in a college classroom.
Having taught on two coasts, in public, private, charter, and homeschool co-ops, I have a breadth of experience.
My classes are "pretty fun for a writing class," my students report, but they don't feel like recess. Students will practice significant writing, grammar, organizing, outlining, and speaking skills in my classes. If your child needs support, recovery, or challenge, check out my classes.
