Class experience

US Grade 6 - 7
Students will gain an understanding of the importance of using primary and secondary sources in history research. They will learn to format a history paper according to the Turabian style guide. Turabian is a more complicated method of formatting that is appropriate for history papers.
I have a master's degree in history and a master's degree in professional writing. I have published history papers. I won first place for my history research at a research symposium in 2018.
Homework Offered
At the end of each week, students will be given a portion of their research to conduct or paper to write for the next week's class. Homework could take anywhere between two and four hours, depending upon the individual student. Students will be expected to read enough of the sources to be familiar with the topic presented and the viewpoint of the authors.
2 - 4 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
I will provide a letter grade and detailed feedback at the end of this six-week class.
Grades Offered
Students will need access to a computer with a word processing software in order to complete their research papers. They will also need to bring to class materials to take notes such as paper or notecards and a pen or pencil. They will also need their own copy of the style guide for Turabian formatting.

Students will be able to choose their area of history research, within reason. Topics must be approved by the teacher. It is important to note, per Outschool policy, all topics must be secular in nature. Topics that involve racism, sexism, bigotry, or any oppression of marginalized groups will not be allowed. The topic must be one over which scholarly research can be conducted.
Students will be taught to use Google Scholar to locate primary sources. They will need access to books, periodicals, and/or websites for their research. We will refer to the Turabian style guide throughout the class.
