Description
Class Experience
Students will learn to find sources for a research topic, take notes over the sources, write a rough draft, proofread, edit, and format a research paper according to the guidelines set by the Modern Language Association.
I have a master's degree in professional writing.
At the end of each week, students will be given a portion of their research to conduct or paper to write for the next week's class. Homework could take anywhere between two and four hours, depending upon the individual student. Students will be expected to read enough of the sources to be familiar with the topic presented and the viewpoint of the authors.
Students will need access to a computer with a word processing software in order to complete their research paper. They will also need to bring to class materials to take notes such as paper or notecards and a pen or pencil. Students will need to have access to the internet and/or print sources (books and/or periodicals) in order to conduct their research. They will also need their own copy of the formatting guide for the Modern Language Association.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
I will assign each student a final letter grade based upon their understanding of the content presented in class and their final research paper. These grades will be privately messaged to the students and their parents after the final class.
55 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 2 - 4 hours per week outside of class.
Students will be able to choose their area of research, within reason. The topic must be one over which scholarly research can be conducted.
We will refer to the Modern Language Association formatting guides in this class.
