Class Description: How to Write a Lab Report or Scientific Research Paper

This class is designed to guide students step-by-step through the process of writing a formal lab report or scientific research paper with clarity, structure, and academic rigor. Whether preparing for a school assignment, science fair, or college-level research, students will learn how to communicate their scientific findings effectively and professionally.

Throughout the class, students will receive writing tips, formatting strategies, peer review techniques, and examples of real scientific writing. By the end of the course, they will have a strong foundation in scientific communication and the confidence to produce professional-level lab reports or research papers.

This course is ideal for middle school, high school, and early college students interested in biology, chemistry, environmental science, or any STEM-related field.

Learning Goals

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

Understand the structure and purpose of each section in a scientific lab report or research paper (Title, Abstract, Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion, Conclusion, Figures, References).
Write a clear and concise scientific abstract that summarizes key elements of their investigation.

Develop an effective introduction that includes background information, a research question or hypothesis, and relevant citations.
