This class is a multi-part exploration into the birth and development of America with focus on geography, economy, government, foreign affairs and the people who helped to shape the new nation. Throughout the course, an emphasis is placed on the development of social studies skills, critical thinking skills, geography skills and the multicultural nature of American society. We will study the following topics over the course of 5 weeks: Week 1: Expansion and Nationalism Week 2: Westward Expansion Week 3: The Civil War Week 4: Reconstruction Week 5: The Industrial Revolution Students will demonstrate their learning through participation in the weekly classroom activities (no live meetings). *Each lesson will be delivered via a prerecorded video that will be uploaded into the classroom every week. Each week, students will view the video and follow-up with the suggested activity included with each video link. The instructor will be available to help and will provide individual feedback throughout the course. By the end of the 5 weeks, students will: Demonstrate and strengthen abilities to present historical information. Strengthen note-taking skills. Compare/contrast/synthesize and analyze information. Exercise critical thinking and communication skills in formal and informal discussions. Students are encouraged to follow-up with the next class, which will examine: Review of the Industrial Revolution The Progressive Era World War 1 The Effects of World War 1

In this lesson, we will learn about Manifest Destiny and begin the first part of a two-part look at the Oregon Trail.
Lesson 3:
Oregon Trail (Part 2 of 2) & the Donner Party and the Gold Rush
In this lesson, we will conclude our two-part look at the Oregon Trail and learn about the Donner Party, as well as the Gold Rush.
Lesson 4:
Overview of the Civil War and Reconstruction & Major Battles of the Civil War
In this lesson, we will take an overview look at the Civil War and Reconstruction and learn about the major battles of the Civil War.
