Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 6
Criminology is the study of crime and society’s response to it. In this flexible schedule class for kids, we consider the fundamentals of criminology; approaching it with younger audience in mind, we look at a range of topics in criminology in society and at the individual level. Some of the fundamental questions in the discipline of criminology (such as: What is the root cause of crime? What form of punishment is appropriate? How can crime be prevented?) are discussed with age-appropriate considerations. Students will review a prerecorded video and complete activities related to the criminological topic in focus.

Prerecorded Lessons will consist of some or all of the following:  slides and a lecture;
In class activities will include options where students can ask questions and express thoughts on each topic, as well as complete assigned activities.

*There will not be any live classes!

Many of the main theories in crime causation are looked at in depth: rational choice, social learning theory, strain theory, deterrence, and biological theories related to crime. Additionally, we will discuss theory as applied to victimology, punishment, and juvenile justice. By the end of the course, young students will have been exposed to many of the major theories and processes in crime-making and the criminal justice system at an age-appropriate level. Young students have the opportunity to discuss criminological issues with peers and the instructor, as well as obtain a well-rounded introduction to the subject of criminology.

Student Learning Outcomes:
•	classify and analyze the various criminological theories in order to explain the origins of criminal conduct at an age-appropriate level.
•	classify and analyze the different crime types, trends, and patterns in order to understand a generalized connection between criminology and the criminal justice system at an age-appropriate level.

** This class is intended for young students; Information and conversation will be presented for a young audience. Ages 7-12 advised.

*** This class is not intended for older students; Older students should consider "Criminology and Crime: Why Criminals Commit Crime!" Ages 13-17 advised.

****There will not be any live classes!

*****This is a flexible schedule class. Each lesson will be delivered via a prerecorded video that will be uploaded into the classroom every week. The instructor will be available to help and will provide individual feedback throughout the course.
