In this flexible schedule, 5 week class, we will take a close look real pirates who sailed the high seas! We will explore 10 pirates; we will learn what he (or she!) did before piracy, why they became a pirate, life as a pirate, and what ultimately happened to them! No purchases will be needed for this class, and information needed will be provided through handouts . Prerecorded Lessons will consist of some or all of the following: slides and a lecture. As a flex class, we will not meet live! Each week will be a flexible schedule. Students will demonstrate their learning through participation in the weekly classroom activities (no live meetings). The emphasis of activity is through the pedagogical practice of Socratic discussions and engagement. *This is a flexible schedule class. Each lesson will be delivered via a prerecorded video that will be uploaded into the classroom every week. Each week, students will be assigned an activity to complete related to the prerecorded video. Each student will be required to comment on peer activity postings at least once each week (if possible, I do follow through with single learner enrollments), throughout the course in order to develop a sense of community in the class. The instructor will be available to help and will provide individual feedback throughout the course to student responses, questions, and commentary through the Outschool classroom. Lessons will consist of some or all of the following: slides, a lecture, and community discussion (via the Outschool classroom), where students can ask questions and express thoughts, opinions, and anecdotes on each topic that occurs through the Outschool classroom posting area. Additionally, FlipGrid will be used for spotlight topics to promote student interaction. Students will also participate in assigned activities, such as web quests, through FlipGrid, and will conclude the class by creating their own age-appropriate “pirate” persona. During this flexible schedule class, over the next five weeks, we will learn about the following real pirates: Week 1: Blackbeard and Calico Jack Rackham, Week 2: Anne Bonny and Mary Read, Week 3: Madame Cheng and Hippolyte Bouchard Week 4: Black Bart and Ned Lowe Week 5: Capt. Kidd and Davy Jones (A REAL pirate MYTH!)

As we will be learning about real pirates in history, it is advised that we will be discussing some sensitive topics as pirate history is filled with violence. Sensitive topics include violence, kidnapping, bloodshed, and gender inequality. The teacher will do her best to discuss the sensitive topics in a child-friendly manner without losing the historical facts attached to the real pirates we will explore.
