In this seven-week session, students will work with informational and non-fiction texts to increase fluency, vocabulary and comprehension skills that prepares them for third grade with small chapter books, repeated reading and skill checks.

Each week, students will read a small chapter book about one specific summer theme. For fluency, students will use a three-read approach which allows them to read independently, as a group and in choral reading. Comprehension questions will be given and students will be able to write responses, key vocabulary, and their own ideas and summaries about each selection. Students will increase reading fluency, their approach to comprehension on longer, informational texts, and how to master new vocabulary skills.
This class is designed to help students that have a strong grasp on phonics at the second grade level. Accommodations can be made for students that need some support in oral reading.
Students will receive the materials for each class that they can print out to have on hand for class. Students that do not have access to a printer will still be able to participate as all materials will be displayed. They will need to have paper and pencil available for writing. The students will also need to be able to use the chat function in our class sessions for discussion.
