Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 5
Get the popcorn popping! Students will be allowed to bring their favorite popcorn flavor to class and munch along as we read non-fiction passages about different animal species. This class will focus on students learning to comprehend factual information in a fun environment. Students will read a portion of the passage and when the teacher yells out popcorn another student will be picked to continue reading. Each student will be given an opportunity to read out loud.

After the passage is finished, students will answer a variety of comprehension questions. The questions may consist of matching, answering clues, multiple-choice, or fill in. We will review all questions and answers together. All passages are written for a third-grade to a fifth-grade level. This class is designed for students who like to read about animals. Students will be introduced to mammals, reptiles, and from around the globe.
First, we will read about fennec foxes that have adapted to live in desert climates. (Jan 22)
Next, we will learn about the miniature pink fairy armadillo. (Feb 1)
Then, we will explore the world of mandrills, which are one of the most colorful mammals on the planet. (Feb 8)
In the following weeks, we will learn about pangolins, spectacled bears, and secretary birds (Feb 15, 22) (Mar 1)

Passages will be posted to the classroom the night before for students to print out. Students should have a copy of the reading material in front of them. It makes it easier to read and follow along if they have their own copy of the passage. Although, I understand that not all students may have access to a printer, so please don't let printing issues prevent your student from joining the class. I will always post the reading passage on my screen during class. Students should bring the passage, a pencil, and some delicious popcorn to class. Don't be afraid to get creative with those popcorn flavors!

Learning Goals

Hopefully, students will become one step closer to achieving the ultimate goal of learning to comprehend what they read.
