US Grade 6 - 8
Join us for an exciting and enriching continuous class designed to enhance your child's close reading and comprehension skills through engaging informational texts! Using the dynamic STEM magazine OYLA, we transform the learning experience into an adventurous scavenger hunt. Our mission is to revolutionize your student's mindset from "work" to "exploration" as we dive into captivating articles that span the realms of physics, biology, technology, and logic. In this interactive environment, students will actively engage with textual features, language, and ideas, evolving their understanding and expressing it confidently in their own words. The skills students acquire will not only elevate their reading abilities but will also empower them to tackle various informational texts, from compelling articles to challenging textbooks, with ease and enthusiasm. Each week, we’ll explore a new STEM article from OYLA, empowering students to fully immerse themselves in the content. To enhance their experience, please come prepared with a copy of the scavenger hunt PDF, a die (from a set of dice), and a pen or pencil. Our class will kick off with a stimulating "Brain Warmer" activity centered around logic or idioms, setting the stage for an engaging learning session. From there, we will navigate essential skills, including pre-reading strategies, identifying the main idea, understanding the author's purpose, summarizing, making connections, and exploring vocabulary in context—all culminating in a creative mini-project that allows their creativity to shine. Every session will feature a lively icebreaker, an insightful introduction to the week’s article, interactive reading and writing discussions, and an opportunity to showcase their mini-project—sharing is encouraged but entirely optional! This class is tailored for students in grades 6 to 12, and no prior knowledge is necessary. Students can join at any time during the course—dive in, discover, and let their curiosity lead the way! Embrace the chance to master the art of close reading in a fun, engaging, and supportive environment. Sign up today and unlock your student's potential!
