US Grade 2
Math can be difficult and frustrating for many students. Often times, skills build upon each other creating learning gaps and making more advance concepts feel impossible. Other students may find math to be easy breezy! Maybe they are gaining momentum in their current math courses and you are looking for a challenge. Look no more! In this math class we will use a spiral method (meaning topics are revisited on a number of occasions during a course) to learn 2nd grade math using common core strategies! You can join this class at anytime through the year or miss a class without missing a beat! Topics are focused on four critical areas: (1) extending understanding of base-ten notation; (2) building fluency with addition and subtraction; (3) using standard units of measure; and (4) describing and analyzing shapes. Our goals go beyond "getting the answer!" mathematical practices include: Making sense of problems and persevere in solving them. Reasoning abstractly and quantitatively. Constructing viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. Modeling with mathematics. Using appropriate tools strategically. Attending to precision. Looking for and making use of structure. Looking for and expressing regularity in repeated reasoning. Each class will begin with short introductions, include a mini-game as a brain break, and an opportunity for students to ask questions at any point! Tentative schedule & question types include: Week of 2/2, Week of 3/2 Number Sense: Multi-Digit Whole Numbers analysis that includes expanded form, standard form, word form, mental math addition/subtraction, and more. Base 10 practice Patterns, skip counting, using number lines Comparing numbers using symbols Week of 2/9, Week of 3/16 Fact Families Addition and Subtraction focus without regrouping Repeated addition (beginning multiplication) Word Problems Week of 2/16, Week of 3/23 Measurements Coins Clocks Week of 2/23, Week of 3/30 Data analysis (bar graphs, pictographs, and/or dot plots) Geometry (2-d/3-d shapes, names, attributes) Baseline fractions (1/2, 1/3, 1/4)
Learning Goals
Students will become confident mathematicians by developing a stronger number sense and practicing different strategies to master 2nd grade math standards.
