Second Grade Common Core Math (Weekly)

Math can be difficult and frustrating for many students. Often times, skills build upon each other creating learning gaps and making more advance concepts feel impossible. 
Other students may find math to be easy breezy! Maybe they are gaining momentum in their current math courses and you are looking for a challenge. 
Look no more! This class is perfect for high achieving first graders, third grade support, or anyone in between! 

In this math class we will use a spiral method (meaning topics are revisited on a number of occasions during a course) to learn 2nd grade math using common core strategies! You can join this class at anytime through the year or miss a class without missing a beat! 

Topics are focused on four critical areas: 
(1) extending understanding of base-ten notation; 
(2) building fluency with addition and subtraction; 
(3) using standard units of measure; and 
(4) describing and analyzing shapes.

Our goals go beyond "getting the answer!" mathematical practices include:
Making sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
Reasoning abstractly and quantitatively.
Constructing viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
Modeling with mathematics.
Using appropriate tools strategically.
Attending to precision.
Looking for and making use of structure.
Looking for and expressing regularity in repeated reasoning.

Each class will begin with a short get to know you question, include a math mini-game if time allows, and an opportunity for students to ask questions at any point!
