Class Experience

Do you love rock ‘n’ roll? Have you ever wondered how it all started and how it evolved into punk, metal, and alternative rock? If you’re a fan of music and want to dive into the history of rock, this is the class for you! We’ll explore how rock ‘n’ roll shaped culture, broke boundaries, and gave us some of the greatest artists of all time.

From Elvis and The Beatles to Led Zeppelin, Nirvana, and beyond, we’ll cover the major movements that changed music forever. Through discussions, music history trivia, and interactive activities, students will discover the artists, cultural shifts, and sounds that defined each era—all while exploring the book Rock and Roll: Its History and Stylistic Development.

This is a class taught in many colleges and high schools around the country including The University of California, Berkeley, Indiana University, Ohio State University, and the University of Florida.

TYPICAL CLASS
We use slides to guide each class in a smooth and organized way. Each class starts with the Team Meeting and Life Lesson of the Day. The Life Lesson of the Day is a quote or proverb from a book called "Life's Little Instruction Book" and is where we discuss things like "Keep jumper cables in your car", "control what you can control" or "you can sleep late, but the world doesn't." You can read more about those on my teaching profile but I believe they are a fundamental part of helping young people become good adults! We then do our Ice Breaker Check In where students have a moment to fill us in on what's been going on in life, any goals they have set or progress they have made on their goals, and an ice breaker question of the week.

Each class will focus on a specific genre of music. We will explore the style, culture, top bands, and time line around each genre of rock. We end class with trivia and discussion questions. By the end of this class, students will have a deeper understanding of rock’s evolution, from its blues roots to the alternative styles of today.

CLASS INSPIRATION
I love creating classes for Outschool and blending my passion for teaching with the things I love most. When I was in college, I took a class called History of Rock and Roll, and it completely changed the way I listened to music. I’ve referenced that class and the things I learned more times than I can count—like a guitar riff that never gets old. So when I got the idea to bring that class to Outschool, it hit me like your favorite song blasting through an amp when your hear it LIVE! I knew I had to do it. Now, I get to share the history, legends, and unforgettable moments that shaped rock ‘n’ roll with a new generation of fans.
