Journey Through Music History with Joel! Get ready for an exciting weekly adventure exploring the amazing story of Western Art Music! Join Joel in a fun and engaging session each week as we travel through time, meeting incredible musical figures and discovering how music has changed over centuries. Each week, we'll visit a different era in music history. We'll explore: Ancient Times - Discover the earliest sounds of Western music. Medieval Era - Explore the beautiful music of castles and cathedrals. Renaissance - Experience the rebirth of music and art. Baroque & Rococo - Get swept away by grand and ornamented sounds. Classical Period - Enjoy elegant and balanced melodies. Romantic Era - Feel the passion and drama in the music. 20th Century - Hear the exciting and sometimes surprising sounds of modern music. Living Composers - Learn about the music being created right now! In each era, we'll uncover: What was happening in the world - Learn about history, art, and culture to understand the music of the time. How technology changed music - Discover how new inventions shaped the sounds we hear. Amazing Music - Listen to carefully chosen pieces that are both enjoyable and educational. Each weekly session is designed to be interactive and fun! Joel's teaching style is engaging and informative, bringing history to life through music. Here's what you can expect in each class: Presentation Time (30 minutes): Joel will be your guide, sharing fascinating stories about composers, historical events, and fun facts about each musical period. He'll even connect the music to things you might know from pop culture! Group Discussion & Listening (30 minutes): After the presentation, we'll talk about what we learned and share our thoughts about the music we've listened to. You'll get to share your ideas and hear what others think too! During this time, you'll also complete a simple listening card to help you notice interesting things in the music. What work will need to be completed outside of class? The only homework for this class is to listen to amazing music! Each week, Joel will provide a playlist of curated music for you to enjoy before the next session. This listening is how you'll get ready to participate in our class discussions. For example, you might listen to 5 pieces before a class on Medieval music, featuring composers like Hildegard, Perotin, and Machaut. For another, you may listen to just one piece like the final movement from Beethoven's 9th Symphony. This is an interactive course. You'll get to interact with Joel and other students throughout each session! The class is designed to be a group experience, with time for both listening and discussion. Joel will be there to guide you, answer your questions, and make learning about music history an exciting journey for everyone! Get ready to open your ears and minds to centuries of incredible music with Joel!
