Beginner Level
**This is Part 2 of this course series and builds on Part 1. Please enroll in Part 1 first if your learner has not done so already.** **This class is also ELA and ESL friendly! Please send an inquiry if you have a second language learner and you'd like more information. ●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●● In this multi-day course, learners will use NearPod to practice beginner level reading, vocabulary, spelling, and writing, but most specifically, working on sight words and high frequency words. Sight words are words that need to be memorized by "sight" in that we cannot sound them out and many do not follow traditional English rules. Example: the, have, of, they, from. High frequency words are words that are used often, but even if readers can sound them out, it is recommended they be memorized to aid in fluency. In Part 1, Part 2, and Part 3, we will refer to both sight words and high frequency words as "popcorn words" because they "pop" out at us while reading so frequently. In Part 1, Part 2, and Part 3, we will learn 3-5 popcorn words per lesson. We will work on spelling, word recognition, and talk about the correct way to use each word in a sentence. We will pair each sight word to its own silly picture to help with definition and memorization of each word. This is something that I've found my students love! Having the paired pictures not only helps with memorization and retainment of information, but drastically improves self-esteem and confidence in reading! Reading is REALLY HARD! Confidence is they key to success. I've found that by having engaging lessons, games, and boosting confidence in my students and my own children, they actually like to read. Each class will begin by learning the words for that day and focusing on one letter from the alphabet. We will work on spelling, filling in missing letters, and pairing the word to the photo. We will practice together with the famous, "Time to Climb" in NearPod as well as matching games and memory tests! Part 3 will be open for enrollment during the same day and time so your learner can smoothly transition into the next course. Each part contains 9 lessons for a total of 27 lessons in 27 weeks. I've split the course up into 3 parts to make the financial responsibility for the entire course a bit easier to digest. I've created these courses as multi-day so that the information and lessons can be cumulative. Once we learn the words, we will continue to use and practice them in subsequent lessons. Each lesson will have two printable booklets using the lesson's sentences. One booklet will have all of the mnemonic device photos above the words to aid in memory. The other booklet will not have the pictures for advanced practice. These will be in the form of pdfs and attached to the classroom post that contains the NearPod link/code. The lessons will use NearPod, which is an additional resource accessible from smartphones and tablets as well as browsers. It has interactive features and games for your learner to participate in. The NearPod link for that week's lesson will be available in the classroom announcements page within the hour prior to the class start time. NearPod is necessary for learners to participate! **You do NOT have to create a NearPod account to join the lesson and you do NOT have to pay for it. The link or code from me is all you need to access the lesson. ●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●● SYLLABUS (9 WEEKS): Week 1: Letter - Jj Popcorn Words - one two three four five Week 2: Letter - Kk Popcorn Words - make like use take Week 3: Letter - Ll Popcorn Words - have some come give Week 4: Letter - Mm Popcorn Words - me him her us them Week 5: Letter - Nn Popcorn Words - before after at Week 6: Letter - Oo Popcorn Words - so do no go to Week 7: Letter - Pp Popcorn Words - this that these those Week 8: Letter - Qq Popcorn Words - need sweet keep agree meet Week 9: Letter - Rr Popcorn Words - here there they’re their ●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●● ***My Business Policy*** REFUNDS: Every class is set to a limited refund policy. This means that a full refund will be provided if you cancel, unsubscribe, or withdraw from the class within 24 hours of your purchase OR up to a week in advance of the class. After this period of time, no refunds will be issued. Refunds will not be issued for any case of a student no-show in which the student misses class. My schedule holds a dedicated spot for your child each week. In the event that your child misses class, your payment is a reservation of that time that cannot otherwise be utilized by, scheduled for, or transferred to another student. Additionally; no refunds or makeup classes will be issued for class time lost due to students/parents being unprepared for class. Please read the full class description before enrolling to ensure you can be fully prepared come class start time. TRANSFERS: Transfer requests will be accepted if the request is sent no less than 24 hours prior to the class start time and only for ongoing courses. If you have something come up and cannot make your section time, please send me a transfer request as soon as possible for another time during that same week. In the event of a one-time transfer and you would like your child moved back to their original section day/time, you need to send another transfer request or your child will stay in the current section. There will be no transfers for student no shows under any circumstances. STUDENT NO-SHOWS: A student no-show is defined as a student absence with no prior arrangements made with me. There will be no refunds or transfers for student no-shows under any circumstances. In cases of no-shows for private classes or classes that happen to only have one learner, it is Outschool's policy that the class is automatically cancelled if no student shows up after 10 minutes have elapsed and you forfeit your payment for that class. If you have a private class with me, ALWAYS reach out before class starts if there is a reason you cannot make it. If you experience a family emergency at the last minute that requires you to miss class, please contact Outschool via support@outschool.com in terms of refunds, etc. for this kind of situation. MAKEUP CLASSES: Makeup classes are not offered at this time due to varying schedules. OUTSCHOOL POLICIES: Only the enrolled student is permitted into the classroom and allowed to be on screen and participating in the class. Students may share a screen if and only if they are both enrolled into the class and in that section. Friends, cousins, parents, siblings, etc. are not permitted to be on screen at all. When entering your Zoom meeting, please make sure that your screen name matches your learner's name on the roster OR the enrolling parent's name on their profile. Any other names will not be admitted into the classroom due to safety and privacy concerns. If we as teachers cannot verify who is entering, it is against policy to admit them. Every student must turn on their video for teachers to verify that there is in fact, a child, in the classroom due to privacy and safety concerns. If you prefer your child not be on camera, you need to contact Outschool prior to the class to be "verified" beforehand. Refusing to turn on your camera for teachers to verify a child will result in removal from the Zoom meeting immediately. Only one Zoom account will be admitted into the classroom per student. All Zoom meetings are recorded. Parents and/or guardians are not authorized to watch the class from a second device, but all classroom recordings are available in the classroom page for your viewing after the class has concluded. Some recordings may be deleted if something inappropriate happens during the lesson i.e. nudity or offensive behavior.
Learning Goals
Students will learn over 100 popcorn words in this 3 part course and practice reading them in sentences.

Parental Guidance
Because of this age group, parental supervision is strongly advised. We will use NearPod for every single lesson, meaning your student will likely require your assistance in getting it set up for them as well as helping them navigate the lesson the first one or two times.
Supply List
NEARPOD: NearPod is an interactive, online resource that we use for class. NearPod includes games relevant to the lesson to keep learners engaged the entire time since there is something for them to be focusing on and physically doing every few minutes. This can include little quizzes, matching, drag & drop, drawing, 3D, virtual reality, etc. NearPod is necessary for your learner to participate in addition to Zoom. If available, two devices is ideal for these classes. Most of my students like to have Zoom up on one device and NearPod on a touch device such as a tablet, iPad, or smartphone to make clicking on answers easy for little fingers. However, two separate devices is NOT necessary to participate if not available! ●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●● PLEASE FOLLOW THESE DIRECTIONS Check our classroom posts! Within the hour prior to the class start time, there will be a classroom post with the NearPod hyperlink AND 5 digit code to our specific lesson.
