Beginner Level
Reading Can Be Puzzling: 1st Grade is a cumulative course for learners reading at a 1st grade level to help them scale all the way through 1st grade reading and into a quarter 1 2nd grade reading level. I N T H I S C O U R S E: We will cover all of 1st grade reading concepts including: Review: ✅CVC Blending ✅Sight Words/High Frequency Words ✅Fluency We will Learn: ✅Consonant Digraphs ✅Silent Letters ✅Long Vowel Rules ✅Inflectional and Plural Endings ✅Diphthongs ✅R-Controlled Sounds Learners will also work on fluency and comprehension by reading and practicing both decodables and leveled readers in an attempt to scale into a 2nd grade level by the end of the 16 weeks. T E A C H I N G S T Y L E: ⭐Our teaching style at Shields Scholars is light-hearted and fun. ⭐We use Nearpod for this course, which is an interactive app for the lesson content. This way, kids not only learn via visual and auditory learning, they get to learn kinesthetically as well since they are physically involved in the lesson with simple games such as matching, drawing, memory tests, drag & drop features, and everyone's favorite - Time to Climb. Time to Climb is an interactive quiz where each child chooses a character for the game and as they answer questions correctly, their character races other students to the top of a mountain. First one to the top wins. ⭐You can find a parent demo Nearpod lesson below under the "Materials" section to use for free to see if this would be something your child would like. R E A D I N G A S S E S S M E N T S: Students do NOT have to be in 1st grade to attend this course, but their reading level should be at a minimum of a C level or quarter 4 of kindergarten to begin this course. If you do not know your child's current reading level, you can schedule a 1:1 reading assessment with Ms. Cassie here: 📅https://outschool.com/classes/11-student-assessment-xxqyURdf?usid=eTXGXV4M&signup=true&utm_campaign=share_activity_link 1st grade reading, learn to read, phonics for 1st graders, sight words, CVC words, early literacy, reading fluency, decoding strategies, reading comprehension, 1st grade books, beginner reading, small group reading class, homeschool reading, online reading tutoring, elementary reading skills.

Learning Needs
This class does not specifically focus on ADHD or dyslexia support, but we have had children with both ADHD and dyslexia attend and be very happy with their results.
Parental Guidance
This class uses NearPod, which is a separate online resource.
**NearPod is necessary for your learner to participate in this course!**
Parents and/or guardians, please read the classroom announcements page prior to class to get your learner set up before class begins. Your learner may also need help throughout the lesson to complete the games and use the features, at least at the beginning of the course. This class is for young learners who may not fully understand how to click on a computer or set up NearPod on their own.
All communications will be updated via the classroom page, so please have your notifications turned on. This way Outschool will forward any and all classroom posts to your email so you don't miss any announcements.
Pre-Requisites
Learners should be reading at a minimum of a C level or end of Kindergarten level to start this course. They should be very comfortable blending CVC words and have at least beginner knowledge of long vowel sounds and digraphs.
Supply List
WHAT IS NEARPOD? NearPod is an interactive, online resource that we use for class. NearPod includes games relevant to the lesson to keep learners engaged the entire time since there is something for them to be focusing on and physically doing every few minutes. This can include little quizzes, matching, drag & drop, drawing, 3D, virtual reality, etc. NearPod is necessary for your learner to participate in addition to Zoom. If available, two devices is ideal for these classes. Most of my students like to have Zoom up on one device and NearPod on a touch device such as a tablet, iPad, or smartphone to make clicking on answers easy for little fingers. However, two separate devices is NOT necessary to participate if not available! ●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●● PLEASE FOLLOW THESE DIRECTIONS Check our classroom posts!
