Welcome to Writing Can Be Puzzling: 1st Grade Writing & Spelling, a creative, interactive class designed for young learners! This course will help your child develop essential writing skills, improve their spelling, and boost their confidence through engaging lessons and activities. Whether your child is just starting their writing journey or needs additional practice, this class will help them improve key skills in an enjoyable and interactive way. We Will Learn: ✅Write Simple Sentences: Learn to construct clear, complete sentences using correct punctuation and capitalization. ✅Spelling Practice: Strengthen spelling skills with phonics rules, sight words, and common spelling patterns. ✅Descriptive Writing: Add adjectives and details to sentences to make their writing more colorful and exciting. ✅Narrative Writing: Understand how to structure a story with a beginning, middle, and end, and write their own simple narratives. ✅Interactive Learning: Participate in fun activities and quizzes that reinforce the skills learned, including handwriting practice. Introduction to Writing and the Writing Process
In this lesson, students will be introduced to the stages of writing: prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing. We will explore each stage with interactive activities, using Nearpod to make the process fun and engaging.

Lesson 2:
Simple Sentences and Subject-Verb Agreement
Students will learn how to construct simple sentences with the correct subject-verb agreement. We will practice identifying subjects and verbs in sentences and create sentences together, ensuring proper agreement.

Lesson 3:
Using Nouns and Verbs in Sentences
In this lesson, students will learn to identify and use nouns and verbs in their sentences. Through interactive exercises in Nearpod, they will build sentences using these important parts of speech.

Lesson 4:
Capitalization at the Start of Sentences and for Proper Nouns
Students will learn the rules for capitalizing the first word in a sentence and for proper nouns. This lesson will include examples and activities to reinforce these concepts, ensuring that students apply them in their writing.

Learning Needs
We use a multi-sensory, interactive approach through Nearpod to keep students engaged and provide visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learning opportunities. Gamified quizzes, sentence-building games, and short, focused lessons help attention
Parental Guidance
We will be using Nearpod, an approved third-party tool, to deliver interactive lessons, and no account is required for students to participate. All activities and materials are age-appropriate and designed to support 1st-grade learners in a fun and engaging way.
Pre-Requisites
Learners should be comfortable holding a pencil correctly and should already know how to recognize their alphabet both names and sounds for upper and lowercase letters.

Cassondra Shields (Ms. Cassie):
Cassondra has been an ESL (English as a second language) teacher for four years to the age groups 3-15. She graduated from the Honor's Program at The University of Nevada, Reno with a research thesis on adolescent conduct disorder attributes and how those attributes were statistically represented in adult incarceration and recidivism rates based on longitudinal study results. In order to conduct this type of research, Cassondra studied behavior, neurology, and psychology of children for several years as well as additional English and writing courses to write about this type of research. She has brought her expertise on child development and learning behaviors to Outschool as the curriculum developer for Shields Scholars. Cassondra is also a homeschool mom to her own children.

Rheagan Bloomquist (Ms. Rheagan):
Rheagan earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Texas A&M University-San Antonio. She has a passion for helping people, and she believes every child can succeed when given the chance. She has experience working with elementary school children in her local independent school district. She also has prior experience teaching special needs kids. What Rheagan wants most is to make education exciting rather than scary; her goal is to help all children feel welcome, safe, and smart. She is excited to create a nurturing and fun learning environment for all children with Shield’s Scholars.

Kirste Van Liew (Ms. Kirste)
Kirste earned her Bachelor’s degree from Moody Bible Institute, and she holds a certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL). She has valuable teaching experience at an international school in Tunis, Tunisia. She has tutored students from various countries, including Tunisia, Pakistan, India, Kurdistan, and China. She is passionate about helping children thrive in their learning and loves encouraging them to recognize their progress from the very beginning to where they are now. She believes that parents are the real youth leaders and is here to support and encourage the family as they effectively lead their homes and come alongside their children to encourage and help them grow with a passion for learning. She believes that parents play a vital role in reinforcing what their children learn in school.
