US Grade Kindergarten
Beginner Level
Kindergarten Leveled Reading is for learners to focus on kindergarten leveled books at a B and C level to help them work on natural reading skills. Classes are live with a teacher and interactive using the Nearpod app! Each lesson will focus on getting through two books: one B level and one C level. According to U.S. standards, a B level is quarter 3 of kindergarten and a C level is quarter 4 of kindergarten. In the U.S. all children should be starting 1st grade reading at a minimum of a D level, however, not all states require kindergarten. This is a great ongoing course to get learners used to reading books, only reading the words they see, blending words that they don't know together, and using context and comprehension skills to practice critical thinking skills. I N T H I S C O U R S E: We will read two books each lesson: Levels: ✅B Level = Kindergarten quarter 3 ✅C Level = Kindergarten quarter 4 We will practice: ✅Fluency ✅Vocabulary ✅Sight Words ✅High Frequency Words ✅Using Context + Phonics Skills to Identify New Words ✅Comprehension Practice This course does not focus primarily on phonics. If your child cannot blend sounds together independently, they should start with Shields Scholars' "Reading Can Be Puzzling: Beginner" course and enroll into this course once they're comfortable with kindergarten level phonics. T E A C H I N G S T Y L E: ⭐Our teaching style at Shields Scholars is light-hearted and fun. ⭐We use Nearpod for this course, which is an interactive app for the lesson content. This way, kids not only learn via visual and auditory learning, they get to learn kinesthetically as well since they are physically involved in the lesson with simple games such as matching, drawing, memory tests, drag & drop features, and everyone's favorite - Time to Climb. Time to Climb is an interactive quiz where each child chooses a character for the game and as they answer questions correctly, their character races other students to the top of a mountain. First one to the top wins. ⭐You can find a parent demo Nearpod lesson below under the "Materials" section to use for free to see if this would be something your child would like. R E A D I N G A S S E S S M E N T S: Students do NOT have to be in kindergarten to attend this course, but their reading level should be at a minimum of a B level or quarter 3 of kindergarten to begin this course. If you do not know your child's current reading level, you can schedule a 1:1 reading assessment with Ms. Cassie here: 📅https://outschool.com/classes/11-student-assessment-xxqyURdf?usid=eTXGXV4M&signup=true&utm_campaign=share_activity_link

Parental Guidance
This class uses NearPod, which is a separate online resource.
**NearPod is necessary for your learner to participate in this course!**
Parents and/or guardians, please read the classroom announcements page prior to class to get your learner set up before class begins. Your learner may also need help throughout the lesson to complete the games and use the features, at least at the beginning of the course. This class is for young learners who may not fully understand how to click on a computer or set up NearPod on their own.
All communications will be updated via the classroom page, so please have your notifications turned on. This way Outschool will forward any and all classroom posts to your email so you don't miss any announcements.
Pre-Requisites
Learners should be able to blend CVC words together and know a few sight/high frequency words to join this class. This class is primarily focusing on fluency, comprehension and context. Phonics is not the main focus of this class.
Supply List
WHAT IS NEARPOD? NearPod is an interactive, online resource that we use for class. NearPod includes games relevant to the lesson to keep learners engaged the entire time since there is something for them to be focusing on and physically doing every few minutes. This can include little quizzes, matching, drag & drop, drawing, 3D, virtual reality, etc. NearPod is necessary for your learner to participate in addition to Zoom. If available, two devices is ideal for these classes. Most of my students like to have Zoom up on one device and NearPod on a touch device such as a tablet, iPad, or smartphone to make clicking on answers easy for little fingers. However, two separate devices is NOT necessary to participate if not available! ●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●● PLEASE FOLLOW THESE DIRECTIONS Check our classroom posts!
