Class Experience

We will read an illustrated book, by Tim Hopgood called "What a Wonderful World". This book will be shown during the class, but if the student would like to have their own copy, this book can be found at a public library, any bookstore, or online. Students will then be encouraged to dance and move along to the song, What a Wonderful World, performed by Louis Armstrong. Upon reading a short biography, we will go over rhythm exercises using the words of the song. Students will then have the opportunity to do other drawing and writing activities to learn more, and quiz their knowledge on the jazz legend. No prior knowledge/experience is required for this class. Activity handouts have been provided as pdf files as well.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! My name is Simone Monroe, and I am very excited to connect with your child through music.

I received my Bachelor of Music degree in Music Performance as a clarinetist, and my Master's degree in Clarinet Performance at the University of Miami's Frost School of Music. Although my degree consisted largely of performance, I have spent a lot of time also learning to be an exceptional music educator. I have 7 years of teaching experience for all ages in both private (clarinet and flute lessons) and class (general music) settings.

On this platform I will be engaging with students through private clarinet lessons, general music and arts activities, as well as classes that introduce young learners to movement and dance.

MY PHILOSOPHY: Music should be taught because it allows one to learn discipline and commitment. It has the ability to change lives and teach various life skills needed for a well-rounded individual. Because music is a medium that everyone can relate to, it is something that is already appreciated before a person even comes into the sphere of learning it. It will be my responsibility to enhance and facilitate the guided growth that takes place in an individual’s newfound experience with it.
Because music is so universal, it is also important that the music educator sheds light on the importance of other cultures and their contributions to what the art of music is today. Students will gain more of an understanding/appreciation of other individuals not themselves, and will be made more aware of the world around them.

Outside of teaching and playing music, I have many interests that include traveling, salsa dancing, all things food, and outside adventures!

Thank you for joining me, and I look forward to making music with you!
