In this class we will be reading the book, Growing Up Kind, written by Rose Angebrandt. As we read the story, we will learn how a young girl named Breanna learns the importance of being kind to herself and others. I will read the story aloud engaging your child during reading, by asking him or her several comprehension questions. Please read the class description to see if this class is a good fit for your child. For example: * Why do you think that happened? * What do you think will happen next? * How do you think that character is feeling? What details does the author give you to support your answer? * Describe your connections to this story? * What was the problem in the story? How did the characters solve the problem? After reading the story, we will discuss the book’s parts: what happened in the beginning of the story, middle and end. We will discuss how the character Breanna was kind to others. We will have a class discussion on examples of showing kindness. For example: holding the door open for someone, saying please and thank you, writing a thank you letter or card, feeding animals, spending time with someone, picking up litter, giving a donation, smiling, helping out with chores, saying hello or good morning, etc. I will list your child’s ideas digitally during the discussion. Your child will write a sentence on how he or she can show kindness. I will model writing. There will be 3 different hand outs to choose from. One hand out will have “I can….”, the second hand out will have “I can show kindness by ….” and the third handout will have, "I can be kind". Please choose the hand out that best fits your child’s needs. Your child will then draw an illustration on how he or she can show kindness. We will share our illustrations and writing with the class. ****Please note, this is NOT a digital book. I will be holding the book as I read. I am a kind, patient and friendly teacher. I can not wait to meet your child! See you in the classroom! Ms. Colleen
