Class Experience

Welcome! This course is for neurotypical and neurodivergent students.

The American Psychological Association (APA) defines "social skills as a set of learned abilities that enable an individual to interact competently and appropriately in a given social context. The most commonly identified social skills in Western cultures include assertiveness, coping, communication, friendship-making, interpersonal, problem-solving, and the ability to regulate one’s cognitions, feelings, and behavior."

Mental Health American defines emotional intelligence (EI) as "the ability to manage both your own emotions and understand the emotions of people around you. There are five key elements to EI: self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skills. People with high EI can identify how they are feeling, what those feelings mean, and how those emotions impact their behavior and in turn, other people."

This emotional intelligence program covers social skills, emotional awareness, and character building to enhance relationships and communication through weekly topics. Students will learn a variety of skills that will help them develop self-awareness, improve social interaction, learn stress management, integrate critical thinking skills, and strengthen friendships. Certain concepts are based on cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) skills and positive psychology.

~ Class Experience ~
Keynote is utilized to present the educational content for the social-emotional skill topic of the week. This course is instructional and discussion-based. Student output is encouraged but not forced. Scenarios may be used to prompt critical thinking and engagement, however, there is no role-playing. I respectfully ask that cameras be on so we can work on social-emotional skills most effectively.
