Class Experience

This course has been created to provide understanding and the experience of the foundational stages of making a mask using a variety of papers and cardboard and a few other materials. Each class sequentially builds upon the previous; thus continuing the crafting experience of mask making.

Participants might need some assistance with the beginning stages of cutting the mesh wire to form their mask design in place, and securing it to their head piece. Parental Guidance is suggested with the use of scissors, and the wire mesh.

We will begin by exploring various masks used by different cultures from around the world. I will share my screen in our first class together and show visual images of different masks, and some materials that have been used, and provide some ideas and suggestions on how to use our materials for this course to create our masks. The children will then start to create their initial mask design in the first 2 weeks by taping and securing the cardboard and paper together, and creating their wire mesh mask design. The following weeks are reserved for the applying of decoupage and layering of paper-paste - this is an important stage. Each child will spend considerable time working , crafting their piece. The final stage, painting and decorating allows the young children to personalize their mask, allowing for self expression and creativity to shine. Materials for this course will consists of a lot of cardboard, papers, tape, wire mesh and everyday art supplies and some special glue recipes that are to made before the class starts. A detail material list and with link for resources will be made available upon registration in the classroom section. Below are the key stages we will be focusing on:
