It's time to read!
Get ready to for adventure, friendship and mystery. In this class learners will take turns reading aloud from the magical and wing-filled Dragon Masters books. Learners will read to a special feathered guest. I have parrots and will rotate through which bird is joining us.

I have a BA in English and Early Childhood development, and have been teaching and tutoring reading for over 20 years. While learners are reading, I will help them with pronunciation and decoding, punctuation rules, word meanings, and story elements.

As learners move upward in reading levels, they shift away from learning to read and begin reading to learn. In this class we will focus on building reading comprehension by pausing to discuss what is happening in the story. We will also talk about key elements of the story, such as friendship, respect, or community.

We will meet twice a week, reading the first half of the book on day one. When we meet on day two, we will spend some time recalling what we read on day one before finishing the book.

This is an on-going class. Your learner can subscribe and join us every week, or decide when to attend on a week by week basis.

A huge thanks to Tracy West for creating these magic filled adventure books. Dragon Masters books are part of the branches series designed by Scholastic to bridge the gap between leveled readers and chapter books. They have a Guided Reading Levels of O, an AR Score of 3.3-3.8 and a Lexile Level range of 520L to 600L. There are twenty-seven books in the series. They can be read in any order, but the storyline will be clearer when they are read in order. Your learner should be stepping into or already within one of these reading ranges.

If this range is too high for your learner, check out my Let's Read: Owl Diaries, or Unicorn Diaries class

You do not need to own the book in order to participate in the class.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello, Outschool families. I'm Miss Robin, The Bird Lady, and I'm here to talk about birds. All of my classes, for ages 3 through 11, focus on at least one feathered creature while also promoting literacy, creativity, and social skills. I'm an avid reader and I'm passionate about instilling in my students a lifelong love of reading. I'm also a children's book writer and love exploring stories and creating with kids.

I believe that learning is driven by curiosity and wonder. As a teacher, I take a wholistic approach, using the materials present to introduce and reinforce mathematics, literacy, and science. My classes are set up to encourage participation through listening and sharing. And, of course, they all include something birdy-ful.

I have a B.A. in English and Sociology, with an emphasis on creative writing and early childhood development, from St. Olaf College. Over the years, I've written five middle-grade novels while also working as a nanny, a pre-school teacher, an after-school daycare provider, or an elementary school reading tutor. I am currently the nursery coordinator for a local non-profit, an Outschool mom of four, and a bird caretaker. My house holds a pandemonium of parrots. My backyard is home to a flock of chickens. I also spend time at a local parrot sanctuary, and bird-sit for neighbors and friends.

When I'm not spending time with birds, I'm enjoying a board game with friends, spending time with a good book, making a mess in my kitchen, coaxing new growth in my garden plots, singing loudly in my shower, or catching up on the latest Disney/Pixar/Marvel stories with my kids.

Thank you for spending some time with me today. I look forward to meeting your wonder-filled learners!
