It's time to read! Get ready to giggle. In this class your learner will practice reading aloud from the fabulously funny Elephant and Piggie books. A huge thanks to Mo Willems for creating these wonderful readers. Elephant and Piggie books have a Guided Reading Levels of G-I, an AR Score of 0.5-1.4 and a Lexile Level range of 140L to 210L. Your learner should be stepping into or already within one of these reading ranges. If this reading range is too low for your learner, check out my Let's Practice Reading: Fly Guy class Learners will take turns reading to a special feathered guest. I have parrots and chickens, and will rotate through which bird is joining us. I have a BA in English and Early Childhood development, and have been teaching and tutoring reading for over 20 years. While learners are reading, I will help them with pronunciation and decoding, sight word recall, punctuation rules, letter sounds, and word meanings. Once we have finished the book we will strengthen our reading comprehension by drawing, discussing and acting out what happened in the story. We will also talk about a key element of the story, such as friendship, sharing, or respect. Have your learner bring pencil and paper to draw their favorite moment, or simply write down their favorite words. This is an on-going class. Your learner can subscribe and join us every week, or decide when to attend on a week by week basis. There are twenty-five books in the series and they can be read in any order. You do not need to own the book in order to participate in the class. Today I Will Fly! My Friend Is Sad I Am Invited to a Party! There Is a Bird On Your Head! I Love My New Toy! Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello, Outschool families. I'm Miss Robin, The Bird Lady. All of my classes, for ages 3 through 12, focus on promoting literacy, creativity, and social skills. As an an avid reader, I'm passionate about instilling a lifelong love of reading. As a children's book writer, I love exploring stories and creating with kids.
I believe that learning is driven by curiosity and wonder. As a teacher, I take a wholistic approach, using the materials present to introduce and reinforce literacy, science, mathematics and social science. My classes are set up to encourage participation through listening and sharing. And, of course, they all include something birdy-ful.
I have a B.A. in English and Sociology, with an emphasis on early childhood development, from St. Olaf College. Over the years, I've written five middle-grade novels while also working as a nanny, a pre-school teacher, an after-school daycare provider, or an elementary school reading tutor. I am currently the nursery coordinator for a local non-profit, an Outschool mom of four, and a bird caretaker. My house holds a pandemonium of parrots. My backyard is home to a flock of chickens. I also spend time at a local parrot sanctuary, and bird-sit for neighbors and friends.
When I'm not spending time with a good book, I'm enjoying a board game with friends, whistling along with birds, making a mess in my kitchen, coaxing new growth in my garden plots, singing loudly in my shower, or catching up on the latest Disney/Pixar/Marvel stories with my kids.
Thank you for spending some time with me today. I look forward to meeting your wonder-filled learners!
