Learning to read takes practice. Hello! I'm Miss Robin. I have a BA in English and Child Development. I have been teaching and tutoring, letter recognitions, phonics, and reading for over 20 years. In this ongoing class, I will work privately with your learner, or learners to help them gain the skills and confidence they need to become lifelong readers. We will build phonic awareness, sight word recognition, syllable recognition, mutisyllabic decoding and reading comprehension skills using stories, games, and Harcourt School Publishers Decodable Books. For older readers who are beyond the Harcourt Decodable Books, the books used will be readers choice. You do not need to purchase the Harcourt books. I will be providing your learner or learners access to them during our scheduled time. Each Lesson will be personalized to meet your learner's needs. I will constantly be evaluating your learner's reading skills so I can encourage and strengthen their fluency. During our 30 minute time, you can expect your learner or learners to be creating letter sounds and blended sounds, doing a search and find for sight words, counting words or syllables, and reading something new every day. Your learner does not have to have any prior phonic or sight word knowledge. I will meet your learner at the stage they are in. As a special treat, I will occasionally invite a parrot to join us. They like listening to stories. Please send me a message with your preferred times and I will see if I can make one of them work. Thank you!

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello, Outschool families. I'm Miss Robin, The Bird Lady, and I'm here to talk about birds. All of my classes, for ages 3 through 11, focus on at least one feathered creature while also promoting literacy, creativity, and social skills. I'm an avid reader and I'm passionate about instilling in my students a lifelong love of reading. I'm also a children's book writer and love exploring stories and creating with kids.
I believe that learning is driven by curiosity and wonder. As a teacher, I take a wholistic approach, using the materials present to introduce and reinforce mathematics, literacy, and science. My classes are set up to encourage participation through listening and sharing. And, of course, they all include something birdy-ful.
I have a B.A. in English and Sociology, with an emphasis on creative writing and early childhood development, from St. Olaf College. Over the years, I've written five middle-grade novels while also working as a nanny, a pre-school teacher, an after-school daycare provider, or an elementary school reading tutor. I am currently the nursery coordinator for a local non-profit, an Outschool mom of four, and a bird caretaker. My house holds a pandemonium of parrots. My backyard is home to a flock of chickens. I also spend time at a local parrot sanctuary, and bird-sit for neighbors and friends.
When I'm not spending time with birds, I'm enjoying a board game with friends, spending time with a good book, making a mess in my kitchen, coaxing new growth in my garden plots, singing loudly in my shower, or catching up on the latest Disney/Pixar/Marvel stories with my kids.
Thank you for spending some time with me today. I look forward to meeting your wonder-filled learners!
