During this one-time class, students will discuss their poems, essays, and stories and learn how to find places to publish their writing. We will begin with a lecture including slides and examples that define the elements of a good creative writing. We will review writing techniques like the use of description, plot, universality, dialogue, and subtext in poems, stories, and essays. Together in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, we will share writing and brainstorm ideas for where they could be published. Students will learn how to find writer’s markets—or places like magazines and websites—that best fit their writing and also learn about the process of submitting to these websites, magazines, and literary journals. Throughout class students will participate and provide suggestions to develop each other’s writing. We will touch on reminder writing do’s and don’ts and the challenges in the writing process, like revision, perseverance, and dealing with rejection. Overall, students will learn to identify what makes a publishable piece of writing. This class also will help students learn the steps to brainstorm ideas, organize, and articulate their thoughts to begin a draft. I believe everyone has a story to tell and as a teacher, I will provide students with an overview of writing and publishing basics, so they come away with a solid understanding of the topic through discussion, modeling, examples, and the interactive sharing of ideas. I look forward to teaching your child about the exciting process of writing and publishing.
