Class Experience

Ever wanted to journal but haven't know where to start? Or maybe the idea of a traditional "Dear Diary" writing isn't for you?

This class is dedicated to discussing the basics of journaling and discussing different fun ways to record your personal thoughts and experiences through life. The discussion will be teacher led and will feature a few short activities to open the mind. The discussion and flow of ideas of all students will be greatly encouraged as someone may have the perfect idea and method to share!

We will discuss different ways to journal including: drawing pictures, bullet points, using different colors and designs, adding photographs, and adding items such as ticket stubs...
We will discuss some basic topics and ideas such as: exciting things that you did that day, moments that were important to you, times when you feel like you need to write and talk to someone.... These topics will be brief and kept neutral
There will be a couple teacher led activities to open the mind. We will be doing a blind drawing (they have to draw with their eyes closed) and a short time-capsule activity (this activity will include them writing their favorite things at this time in their life and some goals and hopes for the future).

Parental Guidance
Because this is a class that talks about how students can record their thoughts feelings and concerns there is the chance that a student may bring up a sensitive topic. I will do my best to keep the conversation basic and casual. I will keep the conversation about basic ideas of journaling (drawing pictures, adding photographs or ticket stubs, using different markers and designs...) and any topic ideas that will be discussed will be kept broad and neutral.

Hi! My name is Jessica Wilson and I believe that learning should be an adventure. I live in Southern Utah with my four boys and our dog Boomerang. We love going hiking and exploring. One thing that we love to do is visit historical sites. I love to use the skills I’ve learned studying history, sociology, and education to learn about different cultures and stories from around the world!
My main topic is private 1:1 reading tutoring. I do offer math and writing tutoring as well. I also offer a variety of FLEX classes for a variety of ages. These options include Social Studies, research, cooking, and life skills classes.
I base my teaching in the Humanizing Pedagogy meaning I teach in a way that encourages students to use their agency to question and learn in a setting that promotes connection and community with a sense of belonging. I use a variety of tactics for this including reflection exercises and critical literacy. We will explore different viewpoints and make personal connections with the material. Part of making connections to the material includes creatively demonstrating what students have learned. This may be in any form that excites them including writing, drawing, Scratch, Lego stop motion videos and more.
I have a bachelor’s degree in University Studies with minors in History, Sociology and Spanish. I also have a Master of Interdisciplinary Studies with emphases in Online Teaching, Education and Library. I use a combination of what I have learned in my classes and through various positions in education, customer service and food service to create fun and engaging classes that foster creativity and connection.
