Class Experience

In this weekly ongoing class journalers will learn to express themselves in a space where there is no judgement, no criticism, just encouragement and exploration with a side order of fun. Supporting each other and encouragement will be the focus.

Each week starts off with a check-in, and then a writing prompt, followed by a new background painting technique, then we add collage while discussing composition, and finishing up with creative lettering. Journalers are free to share after each step, but are welcome not to-this is a no rules, no mistakes, can't do it wrong art class.
This is a fun class, with lots of laughing, and silliness and connecting, where mistakes are encouraged, and play the goal.

Who is this class for?
The class size is capped at 6 journalers to keep the space small and safe. Where teens can build relationships, and grow. If you're unsure if art journaling is right for your teen, this ongoing class is a wonderful way for them to try a class and see if they enjoy it.

There are so many beneficial aspects of art journaling but one is that after we journal we cover up what we wrote with paint or a collage technique, allowing for a freedom of expression. Another thing that is great about art journaling is that the techniques are open ended-when I say "put drops of paint across the top of your page," students can choose whatever colour they want, no 2 pages look the same, and there is no comparing, or competition. Participants work on their pages at their own pace-resulting in an original and unique journal page each time.
This is a wonderful class for creative young people who like to explore multiple mediums, for young people who are creative but struggle with comparing themselves to others, or who love to be creative but are sometimes shy. This class is also for young people, who don't like to be micro managed in their art and who like to follow their own path. This is not a paint this/do that art class, the aesthetic of the finished product is personal and reflective of the artist.

There really is room for all types of Creatives in this class. Learners will have a chance to draw on their imaginations, memories and passions while exploring and experimenting with a variety of materials.

The schedule of this class is fluid and will be guided by the learners, if they group wants to try something and we all agree, that's what we'll do.

Learning Goals

Exploring, challenging, taking risks, through art these things can lead to expansion in your life. Art journaling is a safe space to practice these things, as well as learning some fun techniques and building skills you can use your whole life for self expression and wellness.

What teens will get out of it:
a safe way of expressing themselves
find out that it's okay to have fun and make art

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi, I'm Anna and I have seen the power of art journaling both in my own life and the lives of many others. I have been teaching art journaling on line since April 2020, but taught it in person for many years. I have trained as an artist-educator with the Royal Conservatory; I was a parent educator, supporting parents with children's mental health issues; and have worked as a peer-support worker. Art journaling, a safe and private place to express yourself, is a wonderful tool for your whole life.
