US Grade 2 - 4
In this ongoing club, students will work on strengthening their writing skills with collaborative discussion, class diary entries focused on paragraph forms, and individual writing time, creating their own diary in the style of "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" by Jeff Kinney. Everyone is welcome to bring their favorite copies of "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" to class to generate ideas to draw and brainstorm. Each session will begin with students collaboratively sharing the events of their day and choosing one to focus on. The class will discuss descriptive adjectives they can include in their entry and review how to make simple drawings. (approximately 10 mins) Next, the class will collaboratively write an entry in the "Diary of the Amazing Kids." This is the class journal that will be displayed on the screen and be an example to guide and give ideas. Good paragraph writing skills will be reviewed in each class entry. (approximately 10 mins) Students will write about the event they have chosen for the day in their own journals for the last part of the session. They are encouraged to share, ask questions, and support each other in the writing process. There will be an option of sharing their entry at the end as time allows. (approximately 25 mins) Since each session will be an independent entry determined by the day's events of the student's choosing, there are no set themes. Also, the goal is to finish an entry each day. Therefore, students can enroll and unenroll at any time.
