Class Experience

US Grade 4 - 5
This is a basic introduction to fractions. It is intended for students who have little to no experience with fractions or who need a review/tutorial to support their understanding. We will begin by defining what a fraction is and looking at various representations of fractions in the real world. Each class period we will continue to build our understanding as we explore a variety of operations involving fractions. Students will explore equivalent fractions and will learn multiple methods of comparing and ordering fractions before moving on to number operations. Students will be exposed to fractions less than, equal to, and greater than one. Fluency with multiplication facts to 12 (i.e. 5 x 2 = 10; 12 x 3 = 36) is strongly recommended as a prerequisite for success in this class.

Week 1: What is a Fraction? Parts of a Fraction
Week 2: Equivalent Fractions
Week 3: Comparing and Ordering Fractions
Week 4: Adding and Subtracting Fractions with Like Denominators (with sums less than and greater than 1)
Week 5: Adding and Subtracting Fractions with Unlike Denominators (with sums less than and greater than 1)
Week 6: Multiplying Fractions
Week 7: Multiplying Fractions and Whole Numbers
Week 8: Dividing Fractions and Wrap Up
Learning Goals
Students will leave this class with an understanding of what a fraction is and with the ability to perform a variety of operations with fractional numbers including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Students will be able to identify equivalent fractions and will be able to use their understanding of fractional quantities to compare and order fractions with confidence.

Supply List
Please bring a white board and marker with eraser to each session. If that is not available, paper and pencil will work.
At times, students may be asked to bring other household items to demonstrate fractions. (i.e. a student might bring 3 red marbles and 1 blue marble to represent 3/4) I will always let the students know ahead of time if/when they need to bring the "extra" items.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
As a recently retired Math/Science teacher I have spent countless hours helping elementary school aged children discover the wonder of learning. I was privileged to begin my career in the world of Special Education, taught many years in the general education setting, and ended my career in Gifted Education. Helping students discover their talents, passions, and strengths is one of the things that brings me the greatest fulfillment in life. Encouraging each child to find a way to plug those talents into his or her learning is a vital part of who I am. My work as a Gifted and Talented Specialist taught me the importance of inspiring children to look beyond the obvious to the abstract and helped me to see the joy that comes from viewing every child through the lens of his or her strengths. My hope is that, through my teaching, I can help each child to see himself, or herself, through that lens as well.
