US Grade 1 - 2
This interactive club is targeted for 6-8 year old learners who are looking for challenge and enrichment in the area of math. I believe that the joy of learning comes when children have the opportunity to discover new understandings as they experience unique challenges in a safe, nurturing environment. In this course, learners will be presented with a new "math mystery" each week. Learners will have an opportunity to problem solve individually and work together as a small group before the final solution to each puzzle is revealed. My goal is that each learner have a clear understanding of the "why" behind each solution and that they leave the class better equipped, both as a mathematical thinker and as a problem solver in general. Learners will have the opportunity to apply traditional math skills while also developing higher level thinking skills such as deductive reasoning, logic, collaborative problem solving, fluency, and flexible thinking. These skills will help learners excel, not only in all areas of the curriculum, but in life! Week 1 (Week of 9/30/24): How Old Am I (Problem Solving; +/-) Week 2 (Week of 10/7/24): Playroom (Patterns; Number Sense) Week 3 (Week of 10/14/24): Grid Grit (Number Sense; +/-) Week 4 (Week of 10/21/24): If...Then (Hidden Patterns; Geometry; Spatial Reasoning) Week 5 (Week of 10/28/24): Picture the Math (Equations; +/-) Week 6 (Week of 11/4/24): Hidden Treasure Math (Equations; +/-/x) Week 7 (Week of 11/11/24): Who Am I (Properties of Numbers; comparing numbers; +/-) Week 8 (Week of 11/18/24): Who Am I - Twisted (Properties of Numbers; Number Sense) Week 9 (Week of 11/25/24): Square It Up (Number Sense; +/-)

Teacher expertise and credentials
As a former Math/Science teacher and FIRST LEGO League Robotics coach, I have spent countless hours helping elementary school aged children discover the wonder of learning through play. My work as a Gifted and Talented Specialist also taught me the importance of inspiring children to look beyond the obvious to the abstract and helped me to see the joy that comes from viewing every child through the lens of his or her strengths. I have a degree in Biology and have also spent several years working with gifted and talented students in Kindergarten through fifth grade. This gives me a unique perspective as I work alongside my learners, gently guiding their thinking and helping them to discover exciting new truths about the world around them. In addition to my education certifications in Elementary Education, Gifted Education, and English as a Second Language, I also have a degree in Biology from Wake Forest University.
