US Grade 1
In this small group class, we will build important First Grade math skills such as: skip counting, number sense, 3D shapes, story problems, comparison problems, addition and subtraction using numbers 1-20, doubles facts, place value, and U.S. coin values (penny, nickel, and dime) We also learn to draw and use the following models to show our thinking: Ten frames, number lines, domino models, dot drawings, tens and ones. Week 1: 11/26-12/2 -Practicing doubles (2+2=4 , 5+5=10, etc) -Solving equations using a number line -Creating our own number line to match a story problem -Skip counting by 2’s, and 5’s- -Using groups of ten to solve problems over 10 Week 2: 12/3- 12/9 -Practice our doubles facts -Look for a pattern in doubles (we notice that doubles go up by 2 each time) -Work with comparisons -Practice understanding and making number sentences for scenarios such as “2 more than __” or “3 less than____” -Created our own math scenarios to help frogs in a hopping contest Week 3: 12/10-12/16 -3D shapes -Penny dime, and nickel skip counting to find money values -Use and discuss strategies to solve math stories, including: doubles plus or minus one, Counting on, and drawing domino models Week 4: 12/17-12/23 -Doubles fluency practice -Ways to make 10 -Creating addition and subtraction stories within 10 and writing equations based on our models -Skip counting by 5’s -Tally marks
