Gua Bao: Cooking Taiwanese-Style Pork Belly Bao!
In this one-time course, learners will make their own pork belly gua bao from scratch (gluten free dough)!
Succulent, tender pork belly served inside of a soft, fluffy, steamed bao bun... yes, please! This heavenly creation is known as gua bao. It is a popular street food in Taiwan. In this course, learners will cook their pork belly in a delicious braising liquid that will infuse subtle flavors of cinnamon and star anise. Learners will also learn how to make their own bao buns from scratch (gluten- and dairy- free recipe!), as well as how to steam their bao buns. We will prepare a variety of...
I will supply an ingredients list, cooking equipment list, and recipe one week in advance to the class start date. I highly recommend a handheld or kitchen mixer for making the gua bao dough. I base my bao bun dough on a dinner roll recipe from "Gluten Free Habit", which we will be adapting for the purpose of making the steamed bao buns. I have attached a link to the website. Please review it, as it will list all ingredients needed to make the bao bun dough. We will be using white rice flour instead of brown. Thank you (: Additional Note: This course is open for all learners, regardless of whether or not you follow a gluten-free diet (: However, please note that the cooking process for making the gluten-free bao bun dough is different from that of regular, wheat-based dough. Even if gluten is not a concern, I still recommend sourcing the ingredients for the gluten-free dough, which I have carefully recipe tested to ensure a great final product. If you desire to use regular wheat flour, please message me 3-4 days ahead of class time so I can provide you with an ingredient substitution list and alternative recipe for making the wheat-based dough. I appreciate your understanding!
This class is open to all learners! No prior experience in the kitchen is necessary (: However, learners will be using the stove top, as well as implementing a few different cooking techniques, including braising and steaming. For safety purposes, parent supervision is recommended. Allergen information: This recipe is gluten- and dairy-free! The recipe for this class uses gluten-free soy sauce (contains soy). If this is a concern, coconut aminos is an easy substitute. The recipe also calls for crushed peanuts (optional topping).
