4 lessons//4 Weeks
Week 1Lesson 1Learning to make a sound on the head-joint | Simple rhythmsIn this lesson we will learn what the different parts of the flute are called, but we will spend the majority of the lesson on the "headjoint" of the flute. This lesson will focus on topics such as: special flute breathing, forming the lip position correctly to get a sound, positioning the headjoint correctly on our lip. We will also learn about the beat/meter, and get introduced to the quarter note & half note. Students will be given homework to practice at homeWeek 2Lesson 2Refining our head-joint sound | Learning tonguingIn this lesson we will start by seeing where everyone is at with topics covered in the previous session. If anyone is having trouble with their embouchure or getting a sound we will troubleshoot together, and I will give suggestions and comments. We will continue practicing different flute sounds on the head-joint, and clapping & playing rhythms (with quarter note & half note). If most learners are able to get a sound consistently we will continue to learning "tonguing" (aka "articulation").Week 3Lesson 3Putting the flute together | Learning to hold the flute | First notesIn this lesson we will again start by checking in on concepts learned in the prior session. Then we will learn how to put the flute together, and and how to hold it. We will learn left hand position first. Then we will learn our first 3 notes B, A, & G (how to play, read, write them). Learn 1 song: "The A-B song" (1-handed hold)Week 4Lesson 4Positioning right hand | Playing a song with both handsContinue refining what we learned in the previous session. Learn how to place the right hand thumb on the flute correctly. Learn the song "Hot cross buns" with both hands! Reflect on everything learned & Q & A at the end of the class.
