Class Experience

US Grade Preschool - Kindergarten
Did you know that children are getting ready to read from the time they are born? The "code" of reading can be accessible to anyone, but first, you need a few skills to make the process of reading work! In this class, we will build these skills and get your child ready to read. The two primary skills children need are phonemic awareness (the ability to hear and manipulate sounds in words) and knowledge of the alphabetic principle (letter names and sounds.) This class is perfect for preschoolers and kindergarteners as well and children with learning differences such as dyslexia. We will follow the following format:

10 minutes phonemic awareness
10 minutes alphabet knowledge
5-minute application game

We will play games and have fun building our pre-reading skills!

Students will receive a one-page assignment (typically a game) for skill reinforcement. We will cover a variety of prereading skills. No previous knowledge is required from one week to the next.

Course Schedule:

Week One (June 6): How many words in a sentence? Letter M

Week Two (June 13): Rhyming Words; Letter S

Week Three (June 20): Blending Syllables; Letter T

Week Four (June 27): Segmenting Syllables; Letter A

Week Five (July 4): More Rhyming Words; Letter D

Week Six (July 11): Beginning Sounds; Letter N

Teacher expertise and credentials
Welcome to my class! I am an early childhood educator with 15 years of teaching experience.

I have a dual bachelor's degree in early childhood and elementary education from Weber State University. I have also received additional certificates in teaching reading, ESL, and Orton Gillingham instruction. I taught public school Kindergarten for 5 years, First Grade for 7 years, Second Grade for 1 year, and Adult ESL for 2 years. I then taught English as a Second Language to children around the world for 4 years. I love teaching online and I have a vast amount of experience in making my virtual classroom a place of learning and fun.

While most of my classes will be for young children I also love math and the challenge it presents so I hope to incorporate my love of algebra into some of our classes. I'm an avid knitter and have written and published several knitting patterns so I may teach a knitting class or two also!

Whether it's knitting, reading, writing, math, or one of my many other interests, I always bring multiple modalities into the classroom. We will sing, talk, and laugh. I incorporate movement, games, and images into my classroom.

I believe that the most important thing to help students learn is the connection they feel with the teacher. When students know that their teacher cares about them they want to work hard and succeed.

A little more about me: I live in a rural area of Utah. We have two dogs, one cat, and 12 chickens. I have five daughters, ages 15, 13, 7,4. and 2. I love to read, knit, and bake. I look forward to seeing you in my classroom!
