1 hour per week. Virtual homework portals are offered for online worksheets and review work. Students are encouraged to work on memorizing spelling words, vocabulary, and grammar terms outside of class. Occasionally, students will need to finish writing assignments outside of class.Class Experience
**Students may join at any time! This class offers review days often so students won't miss any material no matter when they join or if they need to pause and take a break. Class is held three days a week with homework assigned on the last day. Usually, this is just working on grammar terms and vocabulary, or finishing a writing assignment. Virtual homework portals will be assigned to each student where they can complete worksheets online for review. Language arts is comprised of many elements. This class will cover the following: Reading comprehension --> We will cover 34 different authors and book excerpts for reading comprehension. (This is my favorite part of class and I've chosen authors specifically to blend contemporary authors students have already heard of with more classic literature authors as well.) My hope is that this much introduction into different authors, their lives, the books they wrote, and different genres might encourage a love for reading and a nice summer reading list curated by the end of class :) Writing --> First half of the year covers the necessary writing skills. Second half will practice using these skills and students will be showcasing them all towards the very end! (My degree in creative writing comes in handy here. I take this part of class very seriously. It does not matter what your student's future goals are, writing is a much-needed life skill!) Grammar --> First half of the year is learning new grammar terms, why we need to know them, and how to use them properly when we write. Second half of the year works on practicing and memorizing these terms. Review is key here! Spelling --> Each week students are given 5 new words, every 5th class we review the previous 4 weeks. Vocabulary --> Each week students are given 5 new words, every 5th class we review the previous 4 weeks. Please see the syllabus for a weekly breakdown of material.
