Class Experience

US Grade 1 - 5
I will assess the English language ability of your child and specifically tailor lessons to them. I will encourage conversation and assist your child with grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation as needed. Depending on the ability and age of the child, I will incorporate different games and props to facilitate learning. Because this is a private class, I have flexibility to work with your child at their current skill level. I have extensive experience teaching English as a second language and welcome all levels. I can assist children who are completely new to English, those that need only "fine tuning" to meet the levels of their American peers, and every level in between. Ages listed are for guidance only. I will happily work with students from age 3 to 18. Your child will have my undivided attention for the entire class. I maintain a fun and judgement free classroom, so your child will feel comfortable. This class is most successful if students attend on a regular basis. I encourage parents to enroll at least once a week. In each class we will build upon previous lessons.
Learning Goals
During each lesson we will strive to improve your child's English and make them more comfortable speaking. For new learners, this might involve how to greet people, recite numbers or repeat short sentences. For students with some English familiarity, I will help them become more comfortable expressing themselves to native English speakers so they can feel more included in their surroundings. For middle level students, we will carry on short conversations about any topic of interest and I will assist with grammar and pronunciation as needed. For advanced students, we will discuss a more complicated topic and I will encourage the use of topic specific vocabulary, synonyms, various verb tenses and proper intonation. During our lesson I will continually assess comprehension, and encourage questions. Many students sign up for this class several times a week for continuity in their learning. I aim to make this class fun, relaxing and rewarding.

I have worked with children ages 3-18 for over 25 years. My experience includes a broad range of skills from pre-reading through university preparation. My specialty is English language learning. I have taught preschool as a lead teacher, and also substituted regularly in elementary and middle school classrooms. Additional experience includes private tutoring for Spanish, reading skills and college essay writing. I also enjoy teaching English as a second language to adults and children. I have worked both in person, and on line, and I am familiar with skills necessary to make both venues successful. I have an undergraduate degree in Engish/Spanish and a graduate degree in communications. I take my teaching seriously, but I try to present the material in a fun way to encourage learners to participate and enjoy learning.
