Class Experience
US Grade 1 - 5
PLEASE NOTE: this class is in very high demand and I now enroll students by request only. First, I must meet your child in one of my "conversation" classes to determine if we will be a good student/teacher team. Then, if appropriate, I will discuss available times with parents. This class requires two weekly meetings. If you see any "availability" listed on line, it is likely to be incorrect. Please contact me to discuss up to date availability. In this private class your child and I will read books together. We will take turns reading out loud and focus on proper pronunciation, speed, diction and cadence. I will discuss many vocabulary words and ask comprehension questions as we progress through the book. We will chat about the characters, setting and plot. I will encourage your child to form real world connections to the story and we will discuss what we like and don't like about the story. This class will provide support for children who are just beginning to read chapter books, children who might be older, reluctant readers and those who might technically know how to read, but might be struggling with comprehension. I also often tailor this class to read with advanced readers who enjoy reading special interest books and talking about them. I usually choose books that are part of an ongoing series to provide continuity with follow up books if the child likes the series. Some of the series that I have used in the past include Danny and the Dinosaur, Fly Guy, Magic Tree House, Cam Jansen, Ivy and Bean, The Littles, Henry Heckelbeck, Mercy Watson, Geronimo Stilton, A-Z Mysteries, Horrible Harry, My Weird School, Nate the Great, Amelia Bedelia, Fancy Nancy, and Goosebumps. I am happy to consider other series. I will chat with the parent before the class to choose an appropriate level and interesting book for each individual child. Depending on the book and the reading level of the child, we might finish an entire short book in one class, or perhaps only read several pages in a more advanced story. Most students enroll in this class several times a week for continuity in our book (a minimum of twice a week is required). This class is not intended for occasional enrollment. I am a fun and casual teacher, but I will expect that the child can stay focused on our book so we can enjoy the story. There is no previous knowledge required for this class, other than an interest in reading, and reading readiness for the above mentioned books. If I do not know your child from another one of my classes, please enroll in one of my 30 minute "Conversation" classes so I can meet your child and assess what type of book might be most appropriate.
Learning Goals
Students will improve reading skills while they learn to love reading. I will develop a plan for each child based on current reading level and individual needs. I focus on reading comprehension, as well as proper pronunciation, which will help every child build a solid foundation in reading skills.

Supply List
All students must have a paper copy of the book that we plan to read. I discourage the use of e-books and I will not hold up my copy of the book for the child to read on the computer.

Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Teacher expertise and credentials
2 Degrees
Master's Degree in English from Bentley University
Bachelor's Degree in English from Smith College
I have worked with children ages 3-18 for over 25 years. My experience includes a broad range of skills from pre-reading through university preparation. My specialty is English language learning. I have taught preschool as a lead teacher, and also substituted regularly in elementary and middle school classrooms. Additional experience includes private tutoring for Spanish, reading skills and college essay writing. I also enjoy teaching English as a second language to adults and children. I have worked both in person, and on line, and I am familiar with skills necessary to make both venues successful. I have an undergraduate degree in Engish/Spanish and a graduate degree in communications. I take my teaching seriously, but I try to present the material in a fun way to encourage learners to participate and enjoy learning.
