Class Experience

US Grade Kindergarten - 4
In this class we will first discuss the importance of using interesting words in our writing. We will practice by changing simple sentences into exciting sentences by substituting descriptive adjectives for common adjectives. We will talk about how specific words keep the reader engaged and provide a more detailed picture of what the writer intends to convey. All of my classes are fun and casual to encourage participation. I tailor each class to the level of the student present. This is a private lesson, so your child will have my undivided attention. This is a stand alone class and no previous knowledge is required, as long as the child is reading and writing at grade level. Please note, this is a discussion based class, students will not be writing, but will engage in active conversation. If you are interested in personal writing practice, please see my private story writing classes.
Learning Goals
Students will improve their ability to choose interesting adjectives in their writing and will understand the need to use diverse words.

I have worked with children ages 3-18 for over 25 years. My experience includes a broad range of skills from pre-reading through university preparation. My specialty is English language learning. I have taught preschool as a lead teacher, and also substituted regularly in elementary and middle school classrooms. Additional experience includes private tutoring for Spanish, reading skills and college essay writing. I also enjoy teaching English as a second language to adults and children. I have worked both in person, and on line, and I am familiar with skills necessary to make both venues successful. I have an undergraduate degree in Engish/Spanish and a graduate degree in communications. I take my teaching seriously, but I try to present the material in a fun way to encourage learners to participate and enjoy learning.
