Class Experience

US Grade 2 - 6
Please note, my schedule is very full and I do not post availability on line. If you are interested in this class, please send me a note and we will work together to find a day/time to meet.

In this class I will summarize plot, characters and setting. We will discuss the importance of each of these three components and how to use them to create a successful short story. I will encourage the child to discuss a book they have recently read and identify the characters, setting and plot. It is often difficult for young learners to understand that a plot is a series of events that rise to a climax, then fall to a conclusion. I will encourage the student to verbally create a story line that incorporates all three critical story components that we have discussed. I will then guide the student to begin writing the story. Most students will be able to write 8-12 sentences that incorporate characters, plot and setting. I will guide the student as needed with leading questions to encourage a logical storyline. Some students will not complete their story, but I hope that they will continue on their own time, or sign up for additional sessions with me. Many students sign up for this class on a weekly basis, and depending their ability, I slowly guide them through additional story writing skills. This is not a grammar or spelling class, but once students become confident in the story writing process I will focus on grammar concepts as appropriate. Many foreign students use this class to help improve written English skills. My classes are casual and interactive. There is no prior knowledge for this class, other than the ability to read and write competently at grade level.
Learning Goals
Students will learn the basic components of a short story, be guided to use them correctly and become enthusiastic about writing their own stories.

I have worked with children ages 3-18 for over 25 years. My experience includes a broad range of skills from pre-reading through university preparation. My specialty is English language learning. I have taught preschool as a lead teacher, and also substituted regularly in elementary and middle school classrooms. Additional experience includes private tutoring for Spanish, reading skills and college essay writing. I also enjoy teaching English as a second language to adults and children. I have worked both in person, and on line, and I am familiar with skills necessary to make both venues successful. I have an undergraduate degree in Engish/Spanish and a graduate degree in communications. I take my teaching seriously, but I try to present the material in a fun way to encourage learners to participate and enjoy learning.
