First class FREE with code LIANGLITERACY4LITTLES10 This is the perfect class for preschool and pre-k students to learn foundational literacy skills to get them ready to read! This class primarily focuses on phonological awareness (understanding sounds), phonemic awareness, and letter concepts (letter recognition and letter sounds). These skills are the FIRST steps to learning to read and they are extremely important. This is a group class that meets weekly. Each week does build on because these skills are learned in a sequence. Class will be as hands-on and interactive as possible. Things will sometimes need to be modified for these young learners. I know they are learning new technology skills as well and sometimes need assistance with virtual learning. Not a problem! Class is kept short at 25 minutes to maintain the attention of young learners. Class will also be kept small at 3-6 learners, so we can tackle several skills and make progress! We will do group activities, games, letter hunts, songs, listen to read aloud, etc. Skills that will be learned: -rhyme recognition, completion, and production -syllable blending, segmenting, and deletion -phoneme initial and final sounds -phoneme blending (this will help students decode words later on) -phoneme segmentation (this will later help students spell) -manipulating phonemes (adding sounds, deleting sounds, etc.) -letter recognition -letter sounds Once your child masters these skills, they will be ready to begin learning a phonics scope and sequence (which typically begins in Kindergarten). Every one of the above skills has a specific purpose and is necessary to be a successful reader. I also offer 1:1 reading tutoring, so please reach out if your kiddo needs additional instruction! LESSON PLANS Please keep in mind lessons are subject to change and be revised as needed. Students may need longer on some skills and shorter time on others. Please refer back to this page weekly for lesson updates. ***Please have some manipulative handy for your child. We will often use small items to assist in hands-on learning of topics. examples: mini slinky, small rocks, legos, cubes, mini erasers, paper squares, etc. You will be notified if anything specific is needed. It will also be noted in lesson plans. Weeks 1-3: Concept of spoken word (counting words in sentences, difference between a word and syllable) and rhyme recognition. Bring goldfish crackers to the FIRST class! Weeks 4-6: Rhyme completion and production. There may be printouts I'll send you for this week. No worries if you can't print, we will have them on screen. Weeks 7-9: Syllables! Blending, segmenting, and deleting. Weeks 10-12: Phonemes, isolation of initial and final sounds. Week 13 & 14: phoneme blending.

Background:
I received my bachelor’s degree in special education and my master’s degree in reading. I am certified in early childhood education, mild-moderate disabilities, severe/profound disabilities, and I am a certified Reading Specialist. I taught in public schools for 12 years. I taught prek, kindergarten, 1st-3rd students with learning disabilities, and middle school students with learning disabilities.
I left the classroom to start my own reading tutoring business. I now solely tutor students in reading and teach on Outschool.
Philosophy:
I follow Science of Reading practices. I use a phonological awareness and phonics scope and sequence when instructing students. Lessons are customized to their reading needs.
I believe in play based, hands-on, multi-sensory learning. My primary goal is for students to have fun so they never feel like learning to read is a chore. I believe the ability to read is the most important thing. It opens doors, takes us on adventures, and provides us unlimited knowledge.
What I Teach:
I offer phonics classes for elementary students, book clubs for secondary students, and individual reading tutoring.
