Detective Writing Tasks Camp Level 2

In this two-day class, students will be given a story. They will be given a writing task to complete based on the story. Students will write a multiparagraph paper in each class.

Homework
1 hour per week. There is no assigned homework in this course. If learners do not complete their writing during class time, they can complete it after class. Students are also encouraged to share their writing with someone at home.

US Grade 3 - 4
In this two-day writing camp, students will be given a story. They will also be given a writing task to complete. Students will write a multiparagraph paper in each class. This class has a detective theme. 

***** WRITING TASK INFORMATION  *****
In this class, students will be given a writing task to complete. A writing task is an authentic writing activity. Writing tasks provide students with an opportunity to show their writing skills in a specific writing text type. Writing tasks are often part of district, state, and national writing assessments. This class will provide students with an understanding on how to complete a writing task. 

***** GRASPS STORY *****
Students will be given the writing task through a story. The story will be designed in the GRASPS format. Below is an explanation of the GRASPS format. 

G = Goal
R = Role
A = Audience
S = Situation
P = Product
S = Standards

***** DAY 1 GRASPS STORY *****

Goal - You must create a step-by-step plan explaining how to solve a mystery. 

Role - You are a detective. It is your job to solve mysteries everyday. 

Audience - You have just hired a junior detective. You are creating the step-by-step plan for the detective to follow. 

Situation - The new junior detective has never solved a mystery before. You will be going to the National Detectives Conference for a week, and the junior detective will be solving all the mysteries for you while you are gone. The challenge is that you must create a plan that will be easy for your new detective to follow. 

Product - You will create a step-by-step plan on how to solve any mystery. 

Standards - Your plan must include materials you need, the steps you take to solve a mystery, and the places you use when solving a mystery.  Your plan must be written as a multiparagraph paper. 

***** DAY 2 GRASPS STORY *****

Goal - You must create an advertisement for an animal that has ran away from the zoo. 

Role - You are a detective. It is your job to create an advertisement for the missing zoo animal to help find the animal. 

Audience - You are creating the advertisement for the people in the big city. You suspect the zoo animal is causing mischief in the big city. 

Situation - The missing zoo animal is a famous zoo animal that has a show to perform in a few hours. The challenge will be to use as many descriptions as possible to catch the eye of the busy city people so they are on the lookout for this zoo animal. 

Product - You will create an advertisement of the zoo animal. 

Standards - You description must include adjectives describing the zoo animal's looks, habitat, and actions. Your description must be written as a multiparagraph paper.

Each class will follow this structure:

***** INTRODUCTION *****
Students will be presented with a story at the beginning of each class and given the expectations for the writing task. This will follow a method called GRASPS.

***** BRAINSTORM *****
Students will brainstorm ideas using a graphic organizer. Students will write down their ideas and organize their ideas in the graphic organizer. 

***** WRITE *****
Students will create their writing task. Students will follow the expectations given for the writing task. 

Each writing task must include:
- An opening paragraph
- At least 3 body paragraphs
- An ending paragraph
- Writing task details

***** SHARE *****
At the end of the class, students will share their writing task with the group.
