Every reader and moviegoer is eating up dystopian fiction right now, and they have good reason! Dystopian fiction has risen in the ranks as some of the most popular literature and I want to help give you tips on how to write your own dystopian story. In this class, we will discuss how to write a unique dystopian setting, types of conflicts that emerge with the genre, amazing characters to drive the story, and simple patterns these stories tend to follow. We will go over elements to include in your writing to make it a dystopian story, as well as overused cliches we cringe at while reading/watching. Lastly, we will brainstorm ideas to make our emerging dystopian stories distinct from other stories in the genre. Looking at popular film/literature examples, we will identify what makes a good dystopian story and how we can replicate that style in our writing. Whether you are a hard-earned veteran at the genre or you're just breaking out into something new, I hope we can all be inspired to write amazing stories to keep our readers thinking.

Parental Guidance
We will be discussing YA fiction books such as The Hunger Games, The Maze Runner, Ender's Game, etc. There may be some discussion of violence in writing as that is a unique topic to dystopian writing. I will not be showing any video clips or reading any excerpts from these media - we will only be using them as examples.
