US Grade 4 - 6
Intermediate - Advanced Level
Students will learn to both analyze mysteries and then write their own under the guidance of a writer with a Bachelor's in Creative Writing and a Master's in Education. Students will learn the elements of a mystery, read mysteries to identify the plot, and then write their own mystery story. Class 1: Students will be introduced to vocabulary for a mystery (i.e. witness, alibi, culprit, etc.) Then they will read a mystery. Class 2: Students will work on vocabulary related to a mystery read a mystery and then answer comprehension questions. Class 3: Students will work on vocabulary related to a mystery read a mystery and then answer comprehension questions. Class 4: Students will read a mystery and then use a template to write a mystery.
Learning Goals
Define elements of a mystery novel; read for comprehension; practice critical thinking as they read the stories; organize writing; practice writing skills and follow the multi-step writing process.

Parental Guidance
Students will have a Google Doc shared with them where they will write their story.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Sources
We will refer to two 5th grade level short story mysteries and a worksheet from Scholastic with information about mysteries.
